Living Room, Family Room Or Great Room- Which One To Use?
You've probably got this down pat, having listed quite a number of properties and knowing that these terms are different from one another as some people may otherwise think. Be it through experience or a keen eye for details, why don't we compare notes on how we determine what to call a particular room? I'll go first.
Maybe it's appropriate to start first with the room usually located at the front or near the main entrance of the home: the living room. It's also known as the front room and it may also function as a parlor or sitting room. While it may sometimes be connected to the dining room, it's designed for more formal occasions, emphasizing on style over function with furnishings and items like books, artworks and antiques.
On the other hand, the family room is more casual and multifunctional- think cozy and with a more personalized feel. It's where you may find yourself watching TV, playing games or simply hang out or relax with family and friends. While the living room connects to the dining room, the family room is either adjacent to the kitchen or at times an extension of it. It often has doors leading to the patio, backyard or any outdoor living areas.
Now combine the living room and the family room (and maybe add in a study or a traditional dining room) into one singular unified space and you get the great room. You can also tell that you're in the great room if it's located near or at the center of the house. It also features raised or arched ceilings.
So how many things did we get the same? Are there any other telltale signs in a room that you use to identify it? Did you encounter any rooms out there that seemed to have gone against the flow? Feel free to comment below!
