Do you have a nosy neighbour?

By
Real Estate Agent

At some point in time we’ve all had a nosy neighbour. Remember those times where you would go outside to check the mail, that nosy neighbour is pretending to prune hedges that do not need pruning. You have friends over for dinner and that nosy neighbour is sitting somewhere within earshot, listening in on your private conversations. So how can you deal with that nosy neighbour?

As a first step, it would be wise to try and deal with a nosy neighbor delicately; after all you do have to live next door to this person. Send them an anonymous letter explaining that you do not appreciate the unwanted attention that they are paying you. Chances are that you are not the only person they have been annoying.

If their nosy behavior continues, drop hints in conversation. Bring up something you saw on the ‘news’. For example – ‘I saw this interesting report on the news today that over 60% of all homeowners have problems with neighbors invading their privacy.’ You are not being rude or confrontational, you are just letting them know that they need to mind their own business.

Ignore Them

Some nosy neighbors just thrive on the attention that you give them. If they can see their actions have an effect on you, they will keep trying to get under your skin. The best way to deal with these kinds of people is to simply ignore them. You will be surprised to find that many nosy neighbors will get bored and look for someone else to annoy.

Block Their View

A fence is a great way to shield your property from unwanted attention. However, your local authorities may have regulations prohibiting you from building a fence above a certain height, so make sure you aren’t breaching any laws before you start building.
Planting a row of tall trees will have the same effect as a fence. Better still, trees are much nicer to look at and they don’t require council approval to plant.

Confront them

You should only confront your neighbor as a last resort. If you have dropped several hints, blocked their view, ignored them and they simply don’t get the message then it’s time to confront them. The most important thing to keep in mind is to not get aggressive; tell them ‘I don’t appreciate being watched 24/7. Mind your own business or I WILL file a restraining order’.

Put on a Show!

If you are the adventurous type, you can give your neighbor the show of a lifetime! Start playing bongo drums in your backyard, tap dance in your living room, dress up in a panda suit and attempt to have an ordinary conversation with your nosy neighbor. After a stunt like this your neighbor will be too embarrassed to meet your eye. Just don’t get too crazy, you don’t want the police knocking on your door!

These are only five suggestions for dealing with nosy neighbors. If you have any additional tips that were not mentioned in this article, feel free to mention them in the comments section below.

Sam, I actually do have the proverbial nosy neighbor! She's so nosy that when we closed on our home and had painters in to start painting, she left nose prints on my dining room window to see what the painters were doing! Half the block ducks when they see her coming!

Good morning Sam Marji

We actually don't have any nosy neighbors.  I think in Albuquerque everyone is busy living their own life and just don't bother keeping their nose in others business.  Oh I've had them before and talk about a pain!  Glad those days (for now) are over.

Doesn't everyone have one ?  Cheaper than a home security system....and far more elaborate details...license numbers....clothing of visitors...make/year of car....

Good morning Sam. You are right, most of us have experienced this at one time or another. It is a bummer but I'm sure about a so called anonymous letter.

I love my nosy neighbor, she called me when packages are delivered to the front door instead of the side one, she would let me know if the grandchildren were too close to the street and she was always there...best security system I ever had and I did not realize how great she was till she moved into assisted care. We miss our nosy neighbor.

I do like nosy neighbors and eve's droppers of all sorts. When the environment is right I start my private conversation with, "We need to be careful, you never know who might be listening." This assures not a single word spoken will be missed.

Then I will engage my guest in conversation of substance. Saturday, I shared a conversation regarding the incredible difference between men and women and their response to shame with a roomful of unusually silent diners.

ALWAYS Rid your speech of gossip ALWAYS. Choose instead to spread the good news of hope, overcoming, selflessness, compassion, hospitality, success and share these words of life to all who have ears to hear.

A nose print on the back door will result in a visit to advise the neighbor you are installing cameras and intend to bring an end to the intrusions by strangers. So, dear neighbor, if you see a sign on my front yard with a picture and the question, "DO YOU KNOW THIS PERSON? Call 123.456,7890" that is what it is all about. Oh, and here is one of those battery powered, micro-sized, cameras that can become impossible to see."

Have some fun. When you anticipate more than one guest at some time in the near future, seed the environment regarding the purpose of the gathering in such a way to be beneficial to you. This way you can find out who nosy is talking to, if anyone. When that is accomplished you have some real fabric with which to work.

By the way, if the house you are selling comes with a nosy neighbor, must you disclose?
