I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and we got to reminiscing, as Old Dudes sometimes do, and we soon settled on a topic of mutual interest - The Grateful Dead. Now my friend is about as button-down looking as you get, a suit-and-tie kind of Realtor, brush-cut hair, well respected in his community, active in his Association, very successful but with a crazy gleam in his eyes - if you look closely.
Well, he gets to telling me about the first Dead show he went to in '68 and the copious amount of pharmaceuticals that were present and how long it took him to return to some semblance of normalcy after this mind-expanding experience. In some ways he will tell you, he has never fully recovered since that was the beginning of a love affair with a band and it's music that has lasted until today. Though he no longer has his old Bluebird bus and doesn't travel the country in pursuit, he still catches every show he can by the descendants of the Dead.

I had to share one my favorite Dead memories with him about the time the Dead played in my home town of Telluride, Colorado in 1987. Bill Graham owned a house there at the time and the Boys were just coming off a run at Redrocks so Bill brought them down for a R&R weekend show in our little town of about 1,000 people.
Tickets went on sale to locals first and since I was living in Arizona at the time I talked my mother into buying tickets for me. She was about 73 at the time and stood in line for 2 1/2 hours with all the local DeadHeads, Rastafarians and other assorted crazies for me. She made some friends in line that day 21 years ago who attended her funeral last year.
It was a blow-out show, nearly 15,000 Deadheads descended on our little village. It also coincided with the Harmonic Convergence and Telluride was one of the focal points of that psychedelically addled venture as well so it was an event to remember (if you remember it, you probably weren't there). It gave new meaning to the term 'There's nothing else like a Grateful Dead Show'.
It was a peaceful weekend with few, if any, arrests. There was one death when a Harmonic Convergence attendee donned a lion skin cape, became one with the universe and flew off a 300' waterfall. Unfortunately for him, the laws of gravity were stronger than the faith & pharmacopoeia that propelled him.
As you take a break from your diligent posts about SEO & blogging & technology & politics, stop by the Musical Rainers Group and post a concert review, a story about your first or your favorite concert, your vote for best band or a video of your current band. All things musical are welcome here so take a little musical break to wash the dust from your soul, then it's back to the ole' blog stone.

Gene,
I"ll give the group a try! Rock on!
Ray - There's Deadheads lurking around every corner. This might bring a few out. I just saw Jorma and Jack last summer in a small opera house in Telluride. SRO - about 200 people max. Still sound great - a little mellower than the first time I saw them back in the 70's w/Papa John Creach.
Shannon - My Mom and son (6 at the time) sat out in our backyard and listened to the show. God bless your Gram and her pink hair.
Richard - please do add on. I think Rainers need a place to swap musical anecdotes. We're a pretty creative bunch judging from what I read.
AHHHHHH....the refreshing sounds of the Dead.... I am listening to them as I type..... I have enjoyed their brand of music for many years. Many shows later and I still cannot get enough. I will stop lurking and start sharing! My favorite show was my first show of the Jerry Garcia Band in Seattle at the Memorial Stadium a wonderful two days spent in the sun with many folks who just wanted to enjoy the music.... I listen to the show often at home.....Thank you for posting this thread.
Best,
Scott
I was at that Telluride show in '87!
There were actually 2 shows that August...One on the 15th and one on the 16th.
I was lucky enough to be able to score a ticket for the 15th and aside from a great show, the surroundings were nothing short of spectacular. Possibly the nicest place I've ever had the opportunity to see a show.
For those who were there, but can't remember, here's the set list for both shows:
08-15-87 Town Park, Telluride, Co
1: Stranger> Franklin's, Minglewood, Candyman, Me & My Uncle> Big River, Tennessee Jed, Desolation Row> Deal
2: Scarlet> Fire> L. L. Rain, Eyes> Drumz> Miracle> Bertha> Morning Dew> Saturday Night E: Baby Blue
08-16-87 Town Park, Telluride, Co.
1: Half Step> Rooster, Iko Iko, Far From Me, West L. A., Masterpiece> Big RxR Blues> Promised
2: Push> Samson, He's Gone> Drumz> Other One> Truckin> Black Peter> Good Lovin E: Touch, Brokedown
Good times, great people, more than a band....
Thanks for stopping by. You probably know this already but if you didn't get a tape of the show, downloads are available at www.archive.org/index. They've got a ton of live Dead for your listening pleasure.
Thanks Gene,
The archive site is already set as a bookmark/ favorite on my computer!
It's loaded with great stuff from all the bands we've come to know and love.
Just a side note...the link you have is not working correctly for the archive....You might want to use this one instead...

And, remember, if you get confused, listen to the music play!

Don't forget....Today, September 11th, is Mickey Hart's Birthday!
Hey Gene,
I know this has nothing to do with this post, but I came across this today and thought you'd appreciate it as much as I did.
This is a street sign in Apex, NC....Could it be the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion?!!!
Thanks Craig - I'd love to take a little walk out there some morning with my Honey. I've still got my staff shirt from the Telluride show with the Dead End sign on the back. For those who don't know - Telluride is near the end of a box canyon and right outside the ampitheater park where the Boys played is a sign advising people the road ends in a couple miles - it's a Dead End. Neadless to say the sign disappeared that weekend but the shirts were a real hit.
