The Ant and the Grasshopper Story as it Relates to Real Estate!

Ant and the Grasshopper

THE NEW LIBERAL VERSION OF THE SAME STORY

As a child one of my favorite stories was the "Ant and the Grasshopper!"  Not only was it entertaining, but there was a lesson to be learned that has transcended millenniums!  The story was one of Aesop's Fables!  It is about an hard working ant that works hard, is industrious and has a plan for the future!  The Grasshopper just wants to have some fun, and doesn't care about the future or the onset of winter and lack of food!  "Carpe diem" at it's best!  The interesting thing is how does this apply to many in our industry today, and to sub-prime borrowers that wanted to buy a home just because they could with no money down?  Our news media is bemoaning many a foolish home owner that signed and did not read what they are signing.  At the same time, the media is neglecting to show how those that worked hard and kept up their homes are being impacted with higher taxes (from home flips and fraud!)  Anyway todays' society is too politically correct and I found a great story to share about this aspect of it!  Should we focus on those losing their homes that should not have owned a home to begin wiht?  Do we concentrate and bail out banks that lent out the money knowing the borrower never  had the ability to repay?  Should we as a society sit back and reward risking behavior at the expense for taxpayers that did the right thing?  As a society we should be prosecuting those that lead this great nation down the wrong road of fraud and greed without bailouts!  The same could be said of folks we worked with... that put aside on funds for a rainyday, taxes, and paid off expenses.  Most of us realize that our business can be really great, but there are a lot of dips in income where we have to provide funds for those rainy days!  So are you an Ant or a Grasshopper?

I love the analogy of real estate to this story.  I AM AN ANT!!!  I think I can... I think I can... I think I can.  OOPS... I think thats the wrong story!  LOL

Jim,

Many upstanding citizens are greatly bothered by the government bailouts of financial and mortgage firms and individuals who lived on the edge and lost the real estate gamble. Something is wrong with the picture that is emerging.

Great analogy.  I am an ant.  I work hard, live within my means, and plan.

Jim - Great story! I am definitely an ant. Work hard and plan.

Jim- I started out an Ant and then went over to grasshopper for a minute but ended up going right back to being an Ant. It is a shame that everyone gets hurt for the mistakes of a portion.

Jim:  I'm afraid that I'm a GrassAnt.  A crossbreed.  LOL   Seriously, I am an Ant and always have been.   Great writing...

If it weren't for the grasshoppers the ants wouldn't have enough to collect!

Huntsville Alabama Real Estate Agent, Kimberly Grant  I like to consider myself an ant too!  We paid as we went along, got the kids through college, and had something side for a rainy day.  I started talking about the coming correction in 2004.

Esko Kiuru - Las Vegas NV Mortgage Consultant  I really feel there is something wrong with the picture.  Those that lived by the rules are about to be screwed!  Even companies like Bear Stearns bailout.  The Federal Reserve had no authority to step outside the bounds of its government charter and work with a non bank using 30 Billion dollars of taxpayers' money!  Our elected officials are not saying anything!

Maria Mastrolonardo - Naperville Illinois Real Estate  Life is about hard work.  Life is also good times and bad, happy and sad.  If we like real estate that is OK!

Brentwood TN Real Estate- Vanessa Stalets  That is why it is a fable...it teaches a lesson!  Some folks learn, and others never will!

Keith & Robin Perry - REALTOR® -West Metro Atlanta  Most folks I know in real estate are very hard working, very honest and earn every dime that comes there way!  I think others just play at it!

Reading the liberal version of the story and filling in some gaps, "The ant went out in the snow..." and then worked hard through the winter to survive again and return back in the scene to begin building for the next year as he had always done.

Isn't this the way it always is?  The workers still work and slave and MAKE things happen while the grasshoppers just find new ways to get out of work and survive; however, Jim you are so right - It will catch up to us as a society!  Unfortunately history tells us that prosperity becomes the death of a nation, and I am sorry to say that we see the evidences of that here.

Keep up the good writing - and working - Summer is almost here!  Steve

Steve Homer I think it is a very interesting story for the current times we are in.   Society has become very narcissistic and it really is all about me in the wrong sense.  In this go around the person that put down 20% and has paid their mortgage down for over 20 years may see their neighborhood turn into a crack neighborhood with vacant homes that society allowed to take place!  Now as a society we are rushing to the aid of those that caused the problem!  Sad that America has lost its way with such loser opportunist politicians that allowed this to happen because they were too busy lining their pockets with loot!
