I just finished a funny, mindless book called High Maintenance, by Jennifer Belle.  It's about a recent divorcee who decides to sell real estate in New York City.  It's a little vulgar, but there were some spots that were laugh out-loud funny.  Not sure I would recommend it if you have delicate sensibilities but if you want to take a break from the serious and get your mind off your own troubles, pick it up.  The heroine has enough troubles for 3 agents!

high maintenance  My piano teacher recommended The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill.  It's a mystery and I am going to start it tonight after I take a walk.

This is vaunted as a gripping whodunnit and I can't wait!!

I'm glad to have you as my friend on goodreads.com, Susan, thank you!  I'm currently reading The Man With a Load of Mischief thanks to you!  I wondered if you finished Eat, Pray, Love.  I especially loved the medicine man in Bali & his information about meditating through the 7 levels of heaven & hell.  What did you think?

Chris

Hi Chris, I loved Eat, Pray, Love.  The medicine man was a hoot!  I would love to learn to meditate.  My favorite parts of the book were Italy, of course.  Second favorite was Indonesia.  I loved the guy she met in India who called her Groceries.  Great book.  I lent it to my friend Liz.  My mom liked it but got a little antsy with it.

I read High Maintenance! Yes, it was entertaining.

Right now I'm reading two of Seth Godin's books and a trashy historical novel. Oh, and our 15 page MLS IDX agreement...

I enjoy reading your posts because they motivate me to get back to some of the many books I have begun reading.

Susan, I just reserved High Maintenance from the library and am looking forward to reading it. Another good read is The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle. It has a lot of provocative themes, but what made me think of it was the real estate agent that the author has as a character.  She is very stereo-typed, but as we all know, stereo-types often evolve for a reason. I don't take any of it personally; I just enjoy it for the escapism and pleasure of reading.

I just read "The memory keeper's daughter" by Kim Edwards, and started Carol Higgins Clark "Burned".  I will definitely check out "High Maintenance" from the library.

Vita,  The Memory Keeper's Daughter is wonderful.  I read it a while ago.  High Maintenance is a fluffy beach book, not in the same league.  I just read Love in the Time of Cholera.  What a book that was!

Hi Susan - I was kinda grossed out by the guy in Love in the Time of Cholera.  I liked it though.

Right now I'm reading The Poisonwood Bible.  So far I'm a big fan of the writing style.

Just ordered a bunch more in the 2 series you suggested to me earlier.  Love 'em!

I loved the Poisonwood bible.  What a nut the dad was!  How horrible for a family to have to give in the whims of a man that way.  I loved every book I've read by that author.

Susan, I just finished High Mainentance--I really enjoyed it!  Did not do much to improve the reputation of Realtors (wouldn't it be nice to read a book where they were held in high esteem), but it was a lot of fun.  I even shared with my son one of the funny quotes about a famous chain restaurant that we, in our house, do not enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation. I have had a tough time lately finding books I enjoy...this was nice and light.

Holly, have you read the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series... they are hysterical.  Laugh out loud funny.  All time favorite as a funny break from reality.

Oh, I will have to check high maintenance sounds fun! Have you read any good real estate laws book lately? I am trying to find some. Thanks!

Ah yes...Reading....I used to love it....haven't had time for a while but you remind me to make time for the things I love....nothing like a tear jerker or good novel to make your day...thanks !

Susan, I will pick up that series...I have a lot going on right now and feel like it is a good time to pick books that offer me an escape!  Appreciate the recommendation.

Susan,

I lean towards biographies, self-help books and magazines like Money, Vanity Fair(I know) it's a little femme, but it has some good articles on occasion.

At the moment I'm reading Jennifer Allan's outstanding Sell With Soul. Good info and great writing style.

Also, The New Earth, by Tolle and Spirit Driven Success by Dani Johnson.

I also have to renew my RE license for about the fourth time so I'll be reading that stuff.

I just finished Loving Frankby Nancy Horan. I have to confess I was a little put off by the cover (yes, I realize that is shallow), despite the clear ties to Frank Lloyd Wright.  I walked by this book for several months before the recommendations built up enough for me to go ahead and get  it--and even still, I would only commit to a library book!

It was a great read with a twist of an ending. It tells the story of a scandalous (and true) relationship between FLW and one of his clients.  I would highly recommend picking it up.

I also just finished reading "Eat, pray, love", for the second time.  It was great.
Before that I read "A new Earth", by Tolle.  I'm reading it for the 4th time.
I find that every time I read it, I 'find' something I missed the time before (or maybe I'm just more aware).

I read something every day. Mostly I read my health magazines. I think I'm addicted to them (it happens, when doctors tell you for 3 years that it's all in your head, and then it isn't....).

I've read Dr. Oz (You, an Owner's Manual, is the latest), Bob Green and so many other doctors and personal trainers, but I'mback to "A New Earth" again, and won't start anything else until I finish that one - again.  It has helped me more than most medicine I've taken lately.

Sylvie, I think way too many women get that "it's in your head diagnosis".  I hope that whatever it was, it was not too serious.

I am currently reading a strange but very funny book called Absurdistan by Gary Shteyngart.  I read everyday.  I have been spending way too much time on Active Rain and not keeping up with my books, but I always have a book going.  I only read magazines if I am between books.  I love the Oprah Magazine and will read that straight through before I pick up a new book.  I am looking forward to reading the next Stephanie Plum novel which my best friend bought me and I am saving for my vacation!

I just finished "Beach Money" by Jordan Adler. If you want to get a new perspective on life, making money, and being true to your own nature, I highly recommend it. His "just do it" attitude motivated me to stretch beyond my comfort level again.
