Safe City Mississauga is a local government program mandated to provide services, programs and information that contribute to the reduction of crime in Mississauga and which help residents and visitors feel safe and secure.
One of the programs offered by Safe City Mississauga is the Neighbouhood Watch. What is the Neighbourhood Watch? Neighbourhood Watch increases community safety by helping neighbours protect themselves, their families, and their property. Safe City Mississauga provides neighbourhoods with signage, a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design audit, a home security seminar delivered by the Peel Regional Police, and window decals to deter criminals.
Nearly all studies show that Neighbourhood Watch areas are associated with lower levels of crime, and research indicates that implementing a Neighbourhood Watch can reduce neighbourhood crimes by up to 26%. Common crimes include break-and-enters, auto-thefts and theft-from-auto.
Safe City Mississauga applies Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles to the watches. This evidence-based approach focuses on changing the man-made environment to make it difficult or unappealing for would-be offenders to commit a crime and can reduce property crime by up to 80%.
