Eco Tip Of The Month- Simple Ways To Kick Your Oil Addiction!

It is amazing to discover how many of our products are made with or contain oil. When you start to think about it you would not want to drink the oil that you put in your car's engine, would you? Well, you do ingest that same oil through many different household cleaning products to the lotion you are putting on your and your baby's skin! Everything that you put on your skin is in your bloodstream within 28 seconds and can even be found in your liver! Now, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that ingesting motor oil, no matter how refined it is, is NOT good for your health! It is not that one dose is going to ruin your health, but rather the building up of the same substance over and over again though many years that creates disease. eco tip of the month april

We know we are not going to stop driving our cars but there are small things that if we do them one at a time we will collectively reduce our dependence on oil and provide ourselves and our families with healthy prevention methods. In my March Eco Tip we discovered that when each family in the U.S uses just ONE 50 ounce bottle of liquid laundry detergent they have used 233,000 barrels of oil! That is enough oil to heat and cool 13,400 homes for ONE year! Imagine that! Just switching ONE bottle of laundry detergent from the petroleum based ones made popular through advertising to a natural vegetable oil based detergent can do that much good.

April's tip of the month is yet another small product change that we all can make
. We made this step 2 years ago and are very pleased with the results.

Change the dishwashing liquid soap you are using.
If every household in the U.S. just did this ONE time, ONE bottle of 25 ounces of Petroleum based liquid dishwashing soap to a natural vegetable based liquid laundry soap that would save 81,000 barrels of oil which is enough to heat and cool 4,600 families in the U.S for ONE year! It is only about 89 cents to $1.25 more per bottle but you don't use much of this soap being that most of you use dishwashers. So you are not buying that many bottles of liquid dishsoap each year.

Now I don't know about you but I think it is pretty disgusting to imagine that the soap you are washing your pots and pans with or your dishes that can not go in the dishwasher with petroleum products, namely oil. You can not smell it because they have covered the smell up with all manner of poisonous fragrances and then added colors to entice you to buy it. Just because you rinse it off after you put it on your hands and dishes does not mean it is all removed!

We switched to Seventh Generation's Liquid Laundry Soap about 2 years ago and never looked back. Knowing that it is non toxic, contains not petroleum products, no artificial colors or fragrances, no chlorine or other poisonous ingredients makes me feel like I am doing my part not just for my family but also for the environment. It also fights the grease the best out of any products bad and good that I have tried. You can find many alternatives at Whole Foods, they even have their own brands. We get Seventh Generation at our Publix Supermarket when I can't make it out to Whole Foods and also at Target.

eco friendly dish soap

If we take living healthier and being eco friendly just one step at a time, resolve to change just one product in your home at a time, one month at a time, you will make a significant contribution to not only your family's health and wellbeing but that of the entire earth! How is that for making a difference.

SO take my Spring Challenge and make the switch today!

I think one of the best companies for ECO friendly products is Melaleuca. They have been making non toxic environmentaly safe products for over 20 + years. You can also make a nice residule income by using these prodcuts and referring them to other people. Thanks for sharing these tips with us Katerina! I have used these products for years and swear by them.

Katerina-Thanks for sharing this eye opening information.  I guess somewhere I knew most cleaning agents come from oil or chemicals, but I never really thought about it like this.  I will be looking at many alternatives now.

Thanks! I am switching!!

I was just in Whole Foods yesterday, and they are having a sale on Seventh Generation products. I am so mad at myself for not buying! I had no idea that dishwashing liquid had that crap in it! To think I thought the fragrances were just to make dishwashing more fun...as if thats possible!

Hi Katerina~

Y'All may want to check out this (alarming?) info out...it appears in the ADD GREEN  NEWS section
at the Eco-All-Stars   ...YIKES!!! TALK ABOUT -green-washing!!!!!

I was just reading my ENN Ezine and learned this:

Cancer-Causing Contaminant Soils Cleaning Products

Seventh Generation, Method and other leading personal care and cleaning brands may soon face lawsuits if they don't remove the word "organic" from their labeling and marketing by Sept. 1.

The ultimatum comes following a recent investigation by the Organic Consumers Assn., which uncovered a potentially carcinogenic contaminant in various products.

The OCA investigated nearly 100 organic cosmetic, personal care and household cleaning formulas, and found that nearly 50% of them contain detectable levels of 1,4-dioxane, which is known to cause cancer in lab animals.

None of the manufacturers disclosed this information on their labels, even though many had levels greater than 1,000 times the acceptable level.

janeAnne- I do a ton of research before I recommend a product or even use a product. For washing dishes in the sink, I buy, Seventh Generation Natural Dish Liquid, Lemongrass & Clementine Zest. This product has never said ORGANIC since I have been buying it for over 5 years now.

Seventh Generation is a great company and is a HUGE environmental advocate. One thing that I have learned is that there are many consumer watch groups that have backers who are not consumer advocates but rather big companies who are losing profits such as Monsanto who will stop at nothing to disguise and destroy the reputations of good companies. I am not saying that this is always the case but it is the case some of the time.

Seventh Generation discloses ALL their ingredients. These are the ingredients in the dish soap that I use.

Here is the safetyneasurenment sheets with testing and chemical composites. I have read them and there is no dioxane in this product.

And the bottom line is I will take these ingredients over OIL, as OIL is a carcinogen!

janeAnne-  As far as my distrust for ENN; check out what the hyperlink tags say in this article. Could BIG PHARMA be behind this article? There are PAID advertisers within the content, not very transparent either. The text hyper link that says 'cancer' is really a link to meds for cancer and has nothing to do with the study. The hyperlink text, 'natural products' is a link to a company who is being promoted misleading people to go to that company and buy products there. This article leaves a lot to be desired in the motive and trustworthiness departments.

Katerina  It is hard to believe that it takes 233,000 barrels of oil to manufacture one bottle of detergent.  Where did you find those statistics?  Time for a trip to Whole Foods!  Great topic!
