We had a saying in communist Romania: "we act like we're working, and they act like they're paying us."   "They" in that sentence was the government, the sole employer for every single person in the country, whether doctor, lawyer, taxi driver or cleaning person.

It was under this "auspicious" environment of "make pretend work" that I had the great misfortune of attempting to fix a cavity on a permanent molar at the age of 14.  I can still remember it today:  the dentist was smoking a cigarette, drinking a glass of wine and talking to his girlfriend on the phone, while he examined my problem tooth.  In case you are wondering, no, there was no assistant present; that was standard communist medical care.

Without letting go of the cigarette, the wine, or his phone conversation, he proceeded to pull my tooth.   He didn't ask me what I wanted, he didn't explain what he was going to do, he just pulled the tooth out.   That was the beginning of the demise of my healthy bite.  That one single molar, so centrally placed in my mouth, has had major implications.   Thirty years later, I am still dealing with the repercussions of that one single action of that particular dentist.

Last week I had oral surgery, one of several interventions I've had as a result of the destroyed bite that one missing permanent molar has caused.  As I was recuperating from the procedure, I thought about that horrible dentist who caused all my dental problems.  I am not even a comma in his history, yet he has certainly impacted my life.  As I was reflecting on that, I realized that ANY professional can have a deep impact on someone's life by either doing a great job or a lousy job.   A lawyer who has a bad day and doesn't do his job well could result in an innocent person going to jail.  A doctor who doesn't perform well could kill a person.  A Realtor who doesn't perform well could cost a family their life savings.

It can be as dramatic as that, or less life threatening, but still very unpleasant, like having the Sellers all packed up and ready to move out and having the deal fall through.  To the Realtor who did not take the proper precautions, this is just another deal gone bad, an inconvenience.  To the family, it's a minor disaster.

The moral of the story is:  each deal mandates your FULL attention.  Diligently follow up on every deal, leave no stone unturned, do your BEST ALWAYS!  No deal is just a deal; to someone it's their life.

Knowledge is key, so study AND consult with other capable professionals.  I propose that we start a Problem and Solution forum right here on AR.  I will start posting blogs titled "Problem & Solution Forum", discussing a problem, then asking you for solutions.  This can be a great way to brainstorm, network, and create a how to manual for keeping all our clients safe and well cared for, regardless of the issues arising.  82,258 minds are better than one!

Well I'm from Croatia.......so a wee bit familiar with the Government as an Employer...:-)  Mostly thru my parents stories though...........The implications.......of a job well done.......or not.......are widespread......as your poor tooth keeps reminding you!  Sometimes I think we feel that as REaltors.......we don't really play all that big a roll..........but its been proved time and time again that We Can Make a big Difference...........as a Blessing or as a Curse!

My goodness, the dentist was a real bad dentist wasn't he... all these years later you are still having problems. All the best.

Bob & Carolin:  The good news is that my teeth look great and no one knows about my horrible bite.  Delving into this problem was strictly an exercise to make the point of the repercussions of a bad professional.

Liz:  I knew we were soul sisters...  Croatia is not far from my origination point.  Yes, indeed, we can make a huge difference!  Thanks for the contribution!

Yeah, she does me too sometimes...  This little meez is such a good representation of me though, I just have to keep her on here.  I'll let you in on a little secret:  I used to be a figure ice skating champ back in Romania, and I get an A+ in roller-blading, but it is virtually impossible to do the can-can on roller-skates on the sand!

I know how you feel, Mirela. I'm glad the communist doctor didn't leave the surgical tool in your jaw. Sometimes the doctors do things like that. You just can't trust a dentist that sips wine, talks to his girlfriend, smokes a cigarette and tries to fix your teeth at the same time anymore.

Anyway, the 'problem and solution forum' is an excellent idea. I can sleep better knowing we're all in this together. all 82 643 of us.

This is a great analogy, and a truth everyone should be conscious of when performing their jobs.

David:  You are HILARIOUS!  I got quite a chuckle when I read your comment on my blackberry.  Now I see that you had a visual aid too...  Good job!

I think the dentist was doing more than "sipping" the wine, if you know what I mean.  Maybe I should check for that surgical tool... maybe that's what's causing the bite problem.  Who knew that my dental problems could be solved by a Top Producing Realtor...

Thank you David for putting a smile on my face today!

M & M,

For what it is worth, your "bad" tooth has not at all affected your stunning photograph.  It certainly has not affected your ethical thinking.  Your observations are accurate in that many of our fellow/sister Realtors do not adequately grasp the extent of their ethical responsibilities to their customers and clients.  The over-riding problem is: we who do not minimize our responsibilities, too often ignore/condone our sister/fellow Realtors behavior when we observe their violations of our code.  The only way to make this a true "profession" is to require ethical conduct from our members.  Until we all make that committment, we are no different that the proverbial "used car salesman".

Well put my friend and well said. I am sorry this dentist impacted your life the way he did and was so cavalier.  I wrote a post today asking if College Degrees for Realtors is in our future.  It comes down to "If we don't clean up our own industry it will be mandated for us".

We do have an impact on our customers and clients.  This is a HUGE part of their lives.  We all work very hard to make sure that our part in this was positive.  Love the idea of the problem and solution!

I have a Russian exchange student living with me for 1 year. In January she broke her ankle--a very serious break. She needed pins and surgery. She commented she was so happy to be here in the US when she had this accident, and not at home! She was very thankful for our level of care here.

I enjoyed this post immensely, Mirela... I'm sorry you had to lose a tooth (and endure the subsequent consequences) for me to "discover" it. Regarding Romania- I have a sister who spent time in Hungary (just after the fall of communism) - she was headed to Romania for a several month stay but ended up hospitalized. Should I be happy that she underwent surgery in Hungary instead? I'm guessing there wouldn't have been much difference. By the way- do you ever get back?

Finally- regarding professionalism... it's so true- we need to constantly be vigilant in offering our clients the best representation possible. I consider it the greatest compliment when a past client refers me on the basis of the experience they had.

It's called focusing on the task at hand. It's a learned art. I had to teach myself that. Isn't that what the client demands?
