When I was studying flute in New York, I played a movement of a Bach Sonata for my teacher, and it sounded beautiful – a lot better than my usual semi-prepared performance.  And he said something that stuck with me.

“You played that from your heart,” he said.

Wow!

And since then, I’ve noticed that really great performers, whether they are dancers, musicians, athletes or actors who are really fabulous, it’s about their energy.  They perform all out – from the heart.

Real estate isn’t all that different.  We are performers.  We perform at Open Houses, listing appointments and contract presentations.  And when we reach the client or colleague, it’s often because they are reacting to our energy.  And that’s when this work is really, really satisfying.

I’ve noticed a bunch of times after doing something really well and walking away from a performance with a fabulous deal for my clients, I’m feeling the way I’ve felt after one of my (relatively few) really great flute performances.  It’s a high, with the feeling that I’ve played from the heart.

So, think back to some time when you did something exceptionally well.  A winning touchdown, being your local spelling bee champion – we all have something.  And the next time you’re psyching yourself up for a huge real estate challenge, remember what that felt like and bring it to your real estate practice.

There’s nothing like it!

A musician!  I am impressed!  Passion is what allows our souls to speak and other to hear our hearts!  If you love what you do, it isn't a job!  It is an advocation!  Success follows!

BTW I am a guitarist and singer!  LOL!

Patricia- The soul of everyday living is 'playing from the heart'. The more you play the more you feel those wonderful feelings that make your heart sing. Great post

The heart is the only place that speaks the language of our God.  It is a language that transends all th ebarriers and when it comes out in the form of artistry, it speaks to God's heart as well.  In the real estate industry, we hear this heart speak only if we truly listen to the heart and soul of the wonderful people we work for.  We can all find the heart of others if we want to.  If we listen well and give freely of who we are, we marry into each and every family for life.

Thank you for the glimpse into you heart.

It's true, you can tell when someone is performing from the heart, their performance stands out from the rest. Great reminder of how we all should conduct our business.

Patricia - Wonderful point, there is no substitute.  It doesn't get more real and passionate than coming from the heart.  I believe it also takes the matter and makes it matter just a bit more.  Good post Patricia!

Pat, great advice.  When we put our heart and soul into what we do, it shows.  It shows to everyone around us -- our clients, the other agents, the other party -- and passion is contagious.

Nothing like the high of a good performance - and you're right, it comes with a good real estate moment just like a good performance.  Heck, it IS a performance!

My son (who is a musician) were talking about the very same thing not long ago.  He is passionate about his "work" as I am mine.   Love your analogy!

Patricia,  I agree with you that it is such a high.  But then for me, there is no other way to play it.

Don't you just love those moments of satisfaction and joy?  Those are the rewards of a job well done.

Jason, it also helps to be doing something that matters to your clients.

Brian, I had a couple of early real estate deals where I caught something from clients.  It's so great to get one who treats you like you walk on water - then that's what you do!

And Margaret, yes, we are always on stage! And when the juices are flowing, it can be a great performance!

Kris, whether or not your son chooses to make a living with music, the passion he has for it will find it's way into other corners of his life.  I get so upset when I hear about school systems cutting out their music programs, because I think those of us who participated in them learned very important skills.

Marc, it's even better than the stuff I smoked in the 60's!

And Norma, can you believe they actually pay us to do it?

Ms Patricia:  This is just an awesome and inspiring post.  Some people may not be affected by such "matters of the heart"... but for some others... having your efforts come straight from your heart just "informs" what you are doing with a purity and a munificence that really can make your performance special... whether as a floutist, a Realtor, or whatever.  Yes... when the "juices are flowing..." magic can happen.  What's more... performing from the heart can, and does inspire others around you to do the same.

The word "inspire"... could be broken down to performing "in spirit."  And... depending on what performing "in spirit" may mean to you... of course it can be a great performance.

You mentioned othes "reacting to your energy."  If you think of energy as a force... the effect it can have is very real, and very noticeable.  This feeling, and this "ability"... is something we need to keep well within our awareness.  We can affect others simply by being our best version of ourselves.  Actually... the more I continue here... the more I feel I am actually writing a post of my own.  But... it's 2:12am here... and I have spent the last three days at a pretty inspiring seminar... so I should not be surprised I can't shut up... LOL.  Take care, and again, thanks for such a great post.

Excited about Real Estate! Yeah that is the power of blogging. You are learning and growing and this causes you to have enthusiasm about what you are doing. I find myself more jazzed up when talking to people because I'm full of new information. It really comes out. I feel it's like being a child learning and growing and excited vs. a person who is not growing and so is not very excited about what they are doing.

I agree. If you do anything in life and want to do it well, it has to come from the heart!
