A to Z
A Stager's Dictionary

Is there a staging dictionary or glossary somewhere?  If not, I think we should compile one.

Here are a few ideas to get us started (not in alphabetical order):

Unstaged- your work has been substantially changed by a client/family member or friend

Restaged- a staged property has been reworked or completely overhauled

Upstaged-a staged property has been given a more high-end look

De-Staging-The removal of all staging items after a successful sale

De-populate-removal of family photos

Furdown-minimize the presence of pets

RANT-remove accessories, nick-knacks and tchotckes (sp?)

BB&B-(Baby's Breath and Bows) dated embellishments

LOP- (Land of Precious, Courtesy of Christopher Lowell) Overly sweet or feminine decor

Salon So Long-Eliminating personal care items

Crystal Blue Persuasion-the color of a stager's face when talking to a resistent homeowner

OINK- (Orange is not Khaki) explaining the difference between neutrals and "now" wall colors

Furbe-Fuzzy toilet cover set

Sherping-Hauling things up and down grand staircases

Wicker Wonderland-Entire room filled with white wicker pieces

101- textbook-basic staging

ADA-Accent Pillow Addiction

Designery-over decorated, as in, "A little too Designery"

Throw-up-hodgepodge wall art arrangement that gives eclectic a bad rap

Faux Pas-painting techniques gone horribly wrong

Faux Pause-painting technique only partially completed

Florabunda-floral arrangements in every room

Cowabunda-large collection of cow figurines; also generic for any large animal figurine collection

PR-Pile-it room where old furnishings go to die.  Also see Black Hole

Black Hole-As required by the Laws of Physics, all homes have a Black Hole that sucks matter into it, including the tools of your trade, unless you are vigilent.

Vertigo-Overuse of striped wallpaper; advising client to remove it

Toile Land-The overuse of Toile in a room or home

Garden of Weedin'-overgrown or labor intensive landscape

ChinWOWserie-a large collection of Asian furniture and/or accessories. (a play on Chinoiserie)

Statue-eerie:  Potentially creepy statuary in home landscaping

Keeblerville:  Yard overpopulared by Elves and Gnomes

From Here to Obscurity: Overgrown hedges and other plantings that hide a house

JIC: "Just in Case" accessories that are used for staging

Matchy-Matchy-extreme repeated use of a design element in a room.  See Design in a Box

Design in a Box-prefab-like decor that is predictable, as in Bedroom-in-a-Bag.

Mark and Leslie, I'm humming that music that the game shows play while the contestant is thinking of an answer...

Julianna, thanks for the link.  I think Craig was being waaay too serious...so where are your definitions?

Trisha, thanks, I think there are more pet inspired definitions to come.  Have any to add?

Julia, I thought maybe it was going to refer to the overuse of throws.  I have seen wall where art did seem to have just been thrown up.  Window treatments too.  Good thinking! Thanks.

And a few more:

Pam - true... I did comment on Schlepping ;-)

Love -- walking in a wicker wonderland.

Ok... here's one for you... "designery" hahaha... do I need to explain? "Too designery" often implies leopard prints and way too many tassels... however "designery" in and of itself is not so bad.

Julianna, "Designery" is how people think that staging is going to look.  Perfect description.  Sherping (from the Sherpas who make it possible for people to climb mountains) was meant to be different from Schleping because it refers to next to the next to impossible feat of moving overlarge furnishings up or down convoluted and/or steep staircases.

Glad you liked the Wicker Wonderland.

Hi Pam - love your post.

I would add:

"De-Staging" to the line-up:  The removal of all Staging items after a successful sale

"Schlepping" is the term we use for hauling things around - never heard of "sherping" - maybe east coast west coast thing?

Kathy, maybe we should check with GW to get his take on staging terms.  Poor man, he can't get a break.

Jennie, yes, De-staging would describe it.  Will add it.  Sherping is my term, for a strickly vertical haul, brought to mind during one of my last stagings where we had to haul things up and down two-story twisting staircases (front hall and back).  Of course the home elevator only went to the lower level!  Yes, we schlepped things all over that one too.

Cute!  I know that I have ADA in my own surroundings.  Close family members have threatened to suffocate me if I purchase another accent cushion.

Pam, Great post and insights.  Some were really funny, hadn't thought of the terms but could really relate on some of your observations!  I will have to bookmark this one, too.

I think I would like to add, "Matchy-Matchy".  Where everything is so symetrical and matched that there is no interest in the room.  Too predictable or style in the room that limits the creativity and visual appeal.

Also, "Design in Box," that looks just like the showroom with no personality of the homeowner or Home Stager.  Too predictable and lacks creativity!

Oh, good ones, Irene.  I've heard "Matchy-Matchy" used and have seen it a lot-especially in bathrooms where the shower curtain matches the wallpaper, tissue holder, waste basket and more.  Design in a Box is similar-like Bedroom in a Bag.  Great additions.  Glad you enjoyed the others from this group effort.
