Cat Wearing SoftpawsIf you've read many of my posts, you already know I'm an animal lover.

Many home buyers are also animal lovers, but hate to think of what their sweet kitty might do to their new home's carpets, or to the new furnishings so lovingly selected for their new house.  While some will decide to declaw kitty, others may hesitate, it's drastic and painful.  I have the solution.

It's called SoftpawsSoftpaws are soft little vinyl caps that cover your cat's claws.  They're applied with a strong adhesive and stay on until the cat naturally sheds that nail.  (About four to six weeks.)  The covers make the claws soft, not sharp, so you no longer have to worry about scratches or destructive behavior.  Your cat will continue with normal scratching behavior but no damage will result.  Of course these should be used ONLY on INDOOR cats.  They are comfortable for the cats and easy to put on.  Most cats will forget about them minutes after application.

In the picture you'll see my cat Aslan.  Aslan is MEAN and a boy, so for fun the kids and I decided he should wear pink.  :o)  The pink is easy to see against Aslan's dark fur, and my cat with white paws wears dark purple Softpaws.  I can see immediately if he's shed one, and if I find a Softpaw on the floor I know who has lost one.  In a multiple cat household, using different colors for each cat simplifies things.  They are available in a rainbow of colors as well as black, white and clear.

Softpaws are also available for dogs, in case you are trying to protect easily scratched hardwood floors.

Don't rule out a house you love because of your pet, don't declaw the pet you love because of a house.

Hi Sarah - cute cat. When I first saw the picture of Aslan, I thought what a great idea...rubber paint for cat claws. Wouldn't that be a great invention?

Hey Sarah,

This is a very useful idea.  I'm going to tell my daughter about it.  How expensive is this item?

Lisa - They're less than $20 for a set, which I think lasts about four months ... might be wrong about that, it will vary on how long they last depending on your cat and how often they shed.  Much cheaper (and kinder) than declawing.

Sheron - People always think I've painted their claws!  I don't think they'd be still until they dried ...

Hi, Danny!  :o)

Hi  Sarah!  I decided to check out you blog from reading Maggie's "Guess What" article when you mentioned writing about pets.  I remember reading your post about going into business with your Dad.  Anyway, I think you write very nice articles!  I liked your post about the Root Cellar, I have written a couple of posts like that for Localism, and I really liked how you did yours.

Congratulations on attracting some potential clients through your writing!

PS, I am an animal/pet lover as well and have been planning on making posts on pets as well, I have already posted two about "my assistant" Sammy already!  I love the name Aslan for your "mean", boy cat!

Hi, Deborah!  I remember your lovely assistant from your Valentine's day post!  LOL!  Your Panda is quite stylish, too.  I'll have to go check out your Localism posts.  It's always interesting to learn about a new place.  Thanks for posting Panda's picture, too!

Thanks Sarah!  Panda has customized my sofa (when it was new!) to change my deocrating scheme to "Shabby Chic", but not as much as Sammy has!  Sammy's hole punching is not restricted to paper alone: lamps, drapes, pillows, throws, books, and anything she can get her beak on to!  Glad to meet you!

What a wonderful idea.  I only wish I had known before my 7 cats killed my leather furniture.  :-(  Live and Learn.  I just adopted a baby toy Yorkie this past Christmas and she had her first nail cut this past week.  She is four months old and tries so hard to jump up on my leather sofa.  Needless to say the edge of the seats have the worn in look.  But I don't care.  I love my babies and so does my family.  Furniture can be replaced.  My furry children can't.  Have a Blessed Day!

There's something about someone who has a heart big enough for all sorts of animals!!! I have learnt alot from my doggie - believe it or not.

Now tell me, this soft paw..... is that what's slipped onto the "toes"? Or did you do a pedicure on your kitty's nails?

I painted Maxx's nails once - my husband called him a Sissy when his nails were the same color as his mommy's..... LOL.

I love this!  I had no idea this product was available.  I'll have to pass this along.  You should let SoftPaws know you're increasing their sales and you should get some kind of kick back. LOL

I have been curious as to how well those softpaws work, so I was excited when I read your blog!  Very cool!  I will have to try them!

Sarah,

I wish I knew about this about a year ago. My husband and I bought a brand new home and our two boys (Rowdy - the lab/pit bull mix and Boogie - the great dane mix) have ruined our hardwoods. I'll get some are try to minimize the damage. Thanks for sharing!

Deborah - Oh, this was so long ago!!  Your decorating scheme is a common one amongst us animal lovers.  ;o)

Vickie - Worn furniture looks loved.  At least that's what I tell myself ...

Loreena - Softpaws are little rubber caps that slip over the claw.  A non-toxic glue keeps them on until the nail is shed.  (On cats, the nail sheds, on dogs it keeps growing.)

Tina - I DID send them a link to this and asked if they'd like to donate to our new animal shelter fund!  They were condsidering it last I heard.

Joslyn - They are very cool!  And seeing the pink ones on our mean kitty makes me smile!

Anthea - Oh, what a shame!  I hope they will help from now on.  My own vet hadn't heard of them when I started using them, so it's no wonder you hadn't either.  Better late than never!  (My best friend has a dog named Boogie!)

Sandi - They work wonders!

I'm the old blog snooping police.  I just noticed the cat is wearing those toe nail thingies.  Cute. Pink for breast cancer awareness or just to immasculate a male cat?

It was pretty much to immasculate a bully.

These are a great idea for cat and dog lovers. I have seen the array of colors offered...on one cat! The first time I saw that, I thought the cat's nails were painted and then realized what they were. Thanks for reminding us of this wonderful invention!

These are a really great idea as an alternative to eclawing a cat which basically makes them an indoor cat for life.

What a neat idea! I have never seen these- may have to try them on my puppy to see if it will cut down not only house damage but also to my skin when she gets all excited when I get home! Thanks!

What a great product.  I have to share that sometimes the pads on my dog's feet are a little rough.  He will groom himself until the little pads are butter soft.  Whenever I feel them I get excited and commend him for making "soft paws", so I have a special love for the name of this product!

Great advice Sarah.  I also recommend Sticky Paws for specific areas that are clawed.

Sarah,

My cat Neil passed away at the ripe old age of 20 last winter, but I wish I had know about this earlier on. I'm going tshare this with my clients on my June favorites.

Anything to avoid de-clawing.

It is particulary stressful for cats to be moved.  I have had no problems moving dogs...they are happy as long as you are there with them.

So, I have to know if the pink softened your boy kitty??  Also after a time their claws grow back so do you put the softpaws on them again?

I have always seen those for cats, but had no idea that they offered them for dogs.  It would have been great to have those for our two French Mastiffs when we moved into our new home with hardwood floors.  Are floors are in such rough shape we are going to refinish them to get all of the scratches out.  Thanks for the insight.

I could never de-claw my babies, but I think this might be a good option to try, especially since you recommend it and have had good success. Like the look of painted nails, too!

Hi Sarah -- how would you like a black & white tabby and golden retriever who teamed up to strip away the softpaws in a week!  We love our animals immensely, and they have the sideyard and whole air conditioned house to themselves while we're gone during the day.

Hi Sarah -- Did you put these soft paws on yourself or did you have the vet do it?  My daughter bought these but has yet to make use of them.

Hey Sarah, I missed this post in Feb, gee whiz whoever invented those should be a billionaire. WHAT a clever idea! They look like nail polish. God bless,
