pngBuyers from  New York City are forever asking me if there is any nightlife in Westchester? And the answer is YES THERE IS!

Downtown White Plains is bustling 24/7 these days and for those who enjoy the active night life of New York City, having such a hub near at hand makes the adjustment to more sedate suburban living far more enjoyable.
I will not try to compare what White Plains has to offer to Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera House. In the end, there is only ONE Manhattan, but the amenities of that particular city are just minutes away by train.  But if you don’t feel like making the trip to Manhattan, there is nightlife here in Westchester.

Previously, I mentioned a couple of points of interest that are putting Westchester on the map culturally:

The first was a posting about how the Westchester Philharmonic will soon be under the baton of  Itzhak Perlman who will become the new artistic director starting in the 2008-2009 season.  The second was a post regarding the  White Plains Performing Art Center at 11 City Place, White Plains, NY 10601 - right inside the City Center. the WPPAC has been coming into its own and hit a milestone when  Robert Cuccioli stared in The Man of La Mancha in several performances last December. With fine dining such as Level 42, BLT and Legal Seafood close at hand, many choose to make White Plains their destination of Friday and Saturday nights.

And to show that there is life after 8 PM – here are some photos of downtown White Plains after 11:30-12:AM PM on a Tuesday night…..Even though it was early in the week, the streets still had pedestrians strolling around and I was taking pictures around the traffic as best I could.  The Pictures feature the newly built up area around the City Center and Renaissance Square. The lighting at the Ritz Carlton wasn't that conducive to late night photos, but I was able to get some excellent shots of the City Center.

Art Nouveau at its best mixes it up with the new modern buildings.

It was spared demolition to make way for the  Ritz Carlton mostly because of concerned citizens.

Ruthmarie, I would have never perceived White Plains as such a happening place after 8PM. This blog was a revelation.

Penny - Well - Hop on a plane and come!  Westchester County Airport is also now a "happening place"  and its just 15 minutes away from the scenes I photographed.

Hi Debbie - You know I have to go and eat at Legal Seafood - haven't been there in a long time.....

Andrew - it wasn't until a few years ago. Now the place is active 24/7. 10  years ago the city closed shop at around 8-9 PM.  It is trying to attract a lot of transplants from Manhattan - and it is.  Satellite Cities of Manhattan such as Yonkers, Stamford, White Plains were previously glorified bedroom communities.  Now they are building a night life of their own. And I guess it is really needed as som many are priced out of Manhattan and the coastal populations continue to soar.

Ruthmarie - it's difficult for some towns to overcome the established perceptions, especially if there has been a lot of recent change. You are doing a great job of informing the buyers what White Plains has to offer today.

Great photo's Ruthmarie.  Not that you don't do other things well, but you really excel at photo-showcasing White Plains.

Hi Candis,

I guess I was thinking about how many DIDN'T turn out well - of course those are the ones I didn't post - LOL..It seemed I needed a very large number of shots to get this to work and I was having trouble without a tripod. I couldn't have the really long shutter speed I needed (I guess) and hold the camera steady long enough.   So much didn't come out - I guess that's the hidden story.  in the meantime, I don't know how to reduce glare from street lights except to try and dance around it.

Hi - how are you - don't know who you are, but you are correct.  It will take time for that to happen.  I think the other thing Manhattanites don't recognize is that EVERYONE has a car.  You aren't locked into one small area. So many want to be able to walk absolutely EVERYTHING.  You can definitely find a place in some towns...Hartsdale, Scarsdale, Tarrytown, Larchmont, parts of Mamaroneck - where you can go for several days without driving, but you don't eliminate it altogether like in the city and it isn't HARD to have a car in here.  It is in the city..

Hi Jesse and Kathy - I work on several towns, but since I live here (and gasoline is through the sky) I have to plan towns that are not on my regular route and that are somewhat distant. Also, in the smaller villages, there is less to photograph... a couple of main streets and then private homes.

Hi Maureen -

Thank you for the feature....I had quite a time with the night photos.  A lot didn't come out at all!  I wanted a picture of the Ritz and Trump - but nothing I did worked.

Hi LIsa -

People thinking of moving here really don't know how close it is.  All these towns and villages - It's very confusing if you don't know the area.
