The majority of purchasers consider price, location, condition, features, transportation, shopping and recreation when deciding which home to purchase.  Not all purchasers are concerned about school quality, but they should be!!!!

The fact that you do not have children or do not plan to have children is not a consideration.  School quality is a major feature to many purchasers and will impact on one's ability to resell the home.  It should be in the "mix" of items to be considered by ALL PURCHASERS.

The question then becomes, "Where do I find the information?"

There are many sources of information available, but the most reliable and unbiased repository of information is the Virginia Department of Education.

Go to SCHOOL REPORT CARD where you will find extremely current information on every public school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The data includes test scores on English, Mathematics, History and Science.  It also includes a comprehensive breakdown of population, crime, and statistical performance by demographic groups within each school, school division and the Commonwealth.  Of course, a personal visit to the school is also important for parents with "special needs" or are interested in specific programs or activities.

As the parents of a "special needs" student my husband and I are keenly aware of the importance of school performance for children at all levels of achievement as well as its' impact on marketing a home.

Hi Karen,

That is one of the things most people ask about when looking for homes.  Have a great week.  Michael A. Caruso

Agred - I always bring it up and particularly if the school has awards, etc. It is important for reselling, and home value.

Sharon  The important point is that you should lead them to the info source, but do not give them the info.  Karen

Hi Cynthia,  It is especially important for resale even if you don't have kids - many young buyers need to have it explained to them,  Karen

Hi Karen...We bought a home in Northern Virginia back in 1981.  At the time we were moving from a small college town in Ohio where we had only one high school and one junior high.  I was looking for a small community and a small high school.  We found that pretty much in McLean.  Two of our children attended MccLean High and had excellent experiences there.  That was extremely important to us.

Down here at Lake Anna I am asked where we do grocery shopping!
