Health & Fitness # 3 - Stroke Signs and Immediate Action is Required
This post is number 3 in my series of Health & Fitness articles posted here in Katy TX.
There are essentially two different types of strokes being ischemic and hemorrhagic. Some individuals suffer from a mini stroke which is caused by a temporary blood clot and is a transient ischemic stroke.
Believe it or not but women suffer more strokes than men and strokes kill more women than men. African Americans who have suffer from higher stroke risks due to high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity have a significantly higher risk of having a stroke than caucasians.
It has been found that the risk of having a stroke doubles every decade of life after you reach the age of 55 years old.
The after effects from suffering a stroke include but are not limited to vision and speech problems, memory loss and issues and paralysis. The financial damage of suffering a stroke can be devastating to the the individual and the whole family.
The critical signs that you or someone else is suffering a stroke are as follows:
-
Facial Drooping - Is one side of the person's face drooping or is it numb? Ask the person to smile and check to see if it is uneven.
-
Speech Issues - Is the person’s speech slurred or not understandable. Is the person even able to speak. Ask the person to say a simple sentence like “ See the Dog running” .
-
Arm Weakness - Is one arm very numb or extremely weak? A simple test is to ask the person to raise both arms at the same time. Watch for anything unusual.
-
Call for help - Call 911 if someone shows any of these signs and that includes situations where the symptoms go away. Get the person to the hospital immediately without delay as time is critical.
I am certainly not a doctor or stroke expert. I think it is pretty easy to check someone out who is suffering from a potential stroke. If this happens to you try to communicate your issues to another individual who can assist you.
