Over the past couple of years, I have been exposed to something I never dreamed I would learn..... Breaking into a home!

What I am talking about is entering vacant homes for the bank after foreclosure!  The first time I was with the contractor, I stood behind him, expecting a wait of 3-4 minutes.  Not only did it not take that long, but he entered the door into the garage, then the door from the garage into the kitchen..... in less than 60 seconds!

At that point, I thought of a comment my father made years ago......A lock will only stop an honest thief!  In other words, if they want in, a lock won't stop them!

Now, why did the contractor choose to enter thru 2 doors versus the front door or the deck door?  Both of them had the dead-bolt locked making it quite a bit harder to get in.  Plus, he said, most people enter and exit through the kitchen or utility room door, which often goes thru the garage.  People seldom lock the deadbolt on those doors.  Often, the garage door doesn't have a dead-bolt!

Since that conversation, I always lock my dead-bolts, to make it more difficult to get into the house.  As I said earlier.....A lock will only stop an honest thief!  If they want in your home bad enough, they will kick the door in, but you should make it as difficult as possible!

Feel free to forward this blog to your client list.  Let's make it as difficult as possible for the bad guys!

Safety is important....and while no one wants to think that they will be the victim of an intruder...being prepared lessens that chance.

Hi Roy.  Locks only keep on honest people is so true.  I sell a lot of REO's so I have gotten pretty good at getting in without keys.

Conrad Allen - Thanks for your observations on locks. Locks alone are not enough for family security in many areas.

I guess if someone really wants to break in, they will probably find a way, but we can make it more difficult as you say

You are exactly right, a lock will only stop an honest thief. Thanks for the reminder to stay safe at home!

 Hi Roy Kelley

My contractor usually finds a window or the back door open. Easier to get in and take the deadbolt off from the inside. Sometimes he finds the keys inside but we always rekey.

It is sometimes a good practice to revisit old blogs and reblogs. We might even find some good ideas for current posts.
