Named one of the "Best Place to live in Rural America", Elk Point, SD, is a community of 1,855 located 15 miles from Sioux City, Iowa on Interstate 29. The Lewis & Clark Expedition made camp in or near Elk Point in August 1804. Elk Point was first settled in 1859, making this community one of the oldest in South Dakota. Elk Point is located in Union County.

Elk Point experienced a resurgence of growth in the 1990s due to an energized business climate along the 75-mile stretch of Interstate 29 between Sioux City and Sioux Falls, SD. Now with Hyperion Resources, resurgence is on its way again.  Within the last decade Elk Point can boast of a new Wel-Life Center for independent senior citizens, a new housing development designed for over 300 new homes, a new 400,000-gallon water tower, and a new $8 million public school designed to meet educational goals of the 21st Century.

Future home of Hyperion's refinery? They haven't even "officially" chosen this area yet according to their company's spokesperson.  The talk of the area is that this refinery will never be built.  Too many factors that don't make sense and the opposition to this project is huge.

Joe,

I wrote a series of blogs about this.  There is opposition but the vote for it out numbered those that were against it.  Even though construction is not even close to starting, Realtors here found that people were interested in what the area had to offer.  So I did a series of blogs geared towards those that were interested in Hyperion and the area of Elk Point, South Dakota.  Lastly, Hyperion still has zoning issues, and othe legal formalities to go through before construction begins.

I stumbled across this site tonight while browsing the web.  Hilarious how people are already trying to capitalize on something that isn't even a reality.  Hyperion will never be able to build a refinery in SD.  Do a little research on Obama's energy policy and read up on Henry Waxman taking over the Energy and Commerce Department in Washington and you will quickly realize that this thing isn't realistic at all.  Please become educated on an issue before you make public comment on it. Just because the "public" voted to approve Hyperion (isn't what they voted about, but rather the re-zoning of the land) doesn't mean a hill of beans. It will be federal and state agencies as well as environmental groups that will control what happens here.  Oh and one other minor detail-our country is in a major recession now and there is no money for this project.

Not sure if anyone read the story in the Sioux City Journal on Sunday (Dec. 14th), but it appears that the proposed refinery is a joke.  The SCJ interviewed 4 top national experts in energy and oil and they all said it wouldn't happen. One said the odds of it going through were "slim to none!"  I guess the people in Union County who are opposed to this knew what they were talking about all along.  Maybe it's the rest of us that had our blinders on.
