After finally winning an Academy Award, Martin Scorsese can direct something other than sprawling period movies and gangster films. Here he takes some cameras to a rock concert and, without Leo DiCaprio, could very well be up for more awards.
Shine a Light is for true Stones fans. It's little more than a beautifully shot rock concert at New York City's Beacon theater. And it is beautiful. It's full of color and detail, and you'd think detail would be an enemy of a sweaty sixty-year-old man. But Scorsese somehow manages to make them watchable. Even Keith Richards, a man whose hair looks like something you'd find in a fraternity shower drain, emanates a warm glow you wouldn't think possible for someone who's legally dead.
The hardest Stone to watch is unfortunately the one you have to watch the most, Mick Jagger. Often he looks like a junior high girl in a mirror. His dancing borders on creepy. He moves like the ugly girl at a strip club, with lots of posing and caressing. Guitarist Ronnie Wood looks most like a rocker. He could be in any band; some of the glamour groups from the 80's, or perhaps as KD Lang's stunt double. It is Charlie Watts, the drummer so comfortable with his anonymity that he left a screening of the movie because he didn't care to watch himself, who needs to write a book on how to look so good past sixty. And how to look like a science teacher yet be in a rock band.
More backstory would be nice, but watching these guys work speaks volumes of their 45-year rock n' roll journey.
Beware: For the most part, it's a concert. If you only like the popular radio versions of Stones' songs then this might just give you a headache.
Who Will Like This: The drunk guy who broke a cardinal rule by talking to me at the urinal about all the concerts he'd been to.
Secret to Better Enjoyment: Hillary Clinton's mother posing with Kieth Richards.

Love the Stones. It's amazing to see how good they still are after everything they've done & been through. I'll definitely watch this one.
