Spring Foward-March 8, 2015-Daylight Savings Time Begins

Daylight savings time has been "messing" with people's schedule for almost a century now. The history of daylight savings is an odd one. The idea came from how ancient civilizations would adjust their schedules according to the sun. Daylight savings saw its first use in Germany during the First World War in an effort to conserve energy (oil) to aid the War Effort. The U.S. proposed to use Daylight Savings for the first time in 1918 but it was repealed seven months late. It would be during the Second World War the United States would first put Daylight savings to use. During that time, Daylight Savings Time was referred to as "War Time" and it lasted all year long until the war ended.

After the war Daylight Savings caused confusion amongst train stations, airlines, and bus stations due to the difference in observance between states and even regions. In an effort to make things easier, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966. Since then, there have been numerous changes to how long and when Day Light Savings Time would begin and end. In 1973, Daylight savings time was used in response to the oil embargo and was reported to have saved the energy
equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

Our current schedule was put into effect in 2007 following the 2005 Energy Policy Act and stipulated that Daylight Savings Time would begin the second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November. And so it is and will be for the foreseeable future that we will “Spring Forward into Spring” and “Fall Back into Fall.”
