giants of buildingLast September I posted a blog which presented a Sortable List of America's Top Home Builders of 2006 & 2007.

The blog reading community was underwhelmed.

Chalk it up to inexperience or a paucity of information- but the link to Builder Online's research was a big eye-opener for me.

For those who specialize in buyer representation, it's helpful to know the trajectory of America's builders.

You'll find all the large home builders as well as many of the smaller builders listed there.

More importantly you can sort them by units sold or Revenue.

Who were the big five of 2006... how about 2007?

Click the above link to find out.

Here's the 2007 "Units Sold" Winners:

  • D.R. Horton
  • Lennar
  • Pulte
  • KB Home
  • Centex.

Revenue is a different story.

The largest revenue company of 2007 was Lennar winning the horse race with D.R. Horton.

So... who will be the next champ?

Who's out of business?

There's a sneak peak at Builder Online ... go here for a preview.

Though they don't have all the data just yet, it appears that [insert drum roll] ....... DR Horton is officially the biggest builder in America.

Mara- it's good to know who the bigger builders are... their growth (or negative growth) rate and how they stack up against each other.

Katerina- Glad you noticed... I used a AR blog customizer add-on here

Teri- the part that looks Arizona-y is the view from a balcony at the Point at South Mountain. I believe that persons who've never been to Arizona tend to be surprised by how many hills and mountains we have.

Some of those builders down here in Texas have a really bad rep. I won't say who. I'm sure you have seen some of the same problems in your area? Thanks for the comment on my blog btw.

Christopher- this is just one measure of a company. I also have create customized google alerts to let me know the "news" about the builders most prevalent in my area.

Also interesting to note- all of the large builders are less large this year... each of them reporting lower revenues and units sold.

Hmm... I wonder if this is publicized enough that the "envy" will spur a new round of buyer incentives in the quest to regain or take over the #1 position?

Kent- There's a great deal of competition at the top- did you see the narrow divide in revenue between the top two? Both companies were listed not so long ago in the Fortune International 500... each one larger than Nike. That's why you'll see steeper discounting on their homes in down times... a drop in units sold or revenue can take a very sizable hit on stock value- which is a huge catalyst for a company's flexibility in the marketplace.

Gene- we have all of them here and they compete like crazy against each other- the winner in all this is the buyer as they have many attractive choices.
