Increase Energy Efficiency #1 in Housing Satisfaction Gap.

The Demand Institute’s survey of over 10,000 households reveals what Americans have to what they want in their current living situations called the ‘Housing Satisfaction Gap’. Survey participants ranked the importance of 52 different home and community characteristics along with evaluated their current home on the same 52 characteristics. The report found the top ten largest Housing Satisfaction Gaps are:

Increase Energy Efficiency ~ Satisfaction Gap 36%. 90% of households have taken some measure in the past five years to consume less energy.           

Renovation Ready ~ Satisfaction Gap 26%. More than 78% of households say their home requires repairs.

Updated Kitchen & Finishes ~ Satisfaction Gap 24%. With households eating more at home the kitchen only grows in importance and 49% of households would consider purchasing a smart appliance.

Age-Friendly Homes ~ 23% Satisfaction Gap. As the population gets older they want a home that they can stay in with low maintenance and up keep being a key factor.

Safe Streets ~ Satisfaction Gap 22%. Living in a safe neighborhood with low crime rate.

Affordable Housing ~ 21% Satisfaction Gap. With rents increasing and wage growth flat almost 40 million households in the US spend 30% or more of their income on housing expenses.

Privacy, Please ~ 21% Satisfaction Gap. 54% of households report that they are spending more time at home these days.

More Space for More Stuff ~ Satisfaction Gap 20%. 49% of movers want more space than they have currently and only 26% want less.

Responsive Landlords ~ Satisfaction Gap 19%. Since 2006 the number of renter households has increased by five million while the number of household owners has declined.

Homes as Investments ~ 18% Satisfaction Gap. 53% of renters hope to purchase in the future.

David, you have lot's of interesting information here.  I think that age friendly homes are going to become more important as the boomers get older.  I'm seeing a lot of downsizing starting to happen.
