Mercer Island, then & now.  Wordless Wednesday

Tabit Square 1961 2015

A little shopping center across a one lane street from an overgrown lot.  A gas station, an old cabin converted to a small business, some old cars.

A strip mall with a crowded parkeing lot, across a 3 lane road, a building crane bringing on what's next.

1961 to 2015 has seen a few changes. I used to play in this lot, catch grass hoppers & snakes.  I don't do that anymore.

Hello Dan.  All I can say is WOW!  The 2010 US census listed the population of the city of Mercer Island as 22,699.  I wonder what it was in 1961.

I also wonder what the price of gas was at the Texaco and they would check your oil and wash your windows.  Remember the slogan... "you can trust your car to the man who wears the star".  Great photos.  Jack

Hi Kerrie, I have to remind myself, change is lifes only constant.

Hi Jack, gas was cheap then, and houses too.  My folks bought there in 1962 for what we'd pay for a used car today.

Dan, time does reveal changes from our childhood.    Bet that gas station actually pumped the gas for you!

It's nice to see that it hasn't changed that much, considering there were already what look like apartment blocks in the background. I just hope that crane isn't building a hi-rise!

Oh my Dan Tabit I totally recall that Texaco station! My Dad & Mom had friends on Mercer Island and we'd visit them often. We'd drive right by it... I so remember grasshoppers and gardner snakes. I haven't seen any around these parts for a long time.
