Hey's It's Tax TimeProperty taxes are one of the “joys” of home ownership in Carlsbad (and elsewhere, of course). Do you detect the sarcasm? But these funds do enable the county to provide certain services, and so all home owners must continue to pay them or see a lien placed on their property.

But in today’s market, you MAY be able to save a bit on your property taxes, at least for a period of time. This will most likely be the case if you purchased your home in the 2003 through 2007 time period, but there are exceptions.

If the market value of your home has fallen below the assessed value on your tax bill, you can request a reassessment by completing an application with the assessor's office by May 30, 2008. Although prices have fallen overall in San Diego County, the assessor's office will not automatically make adjustments; they must be requested in writing by home owners. Assessments are free.

Results of the assessment will be provided to homeowners in early July. There is a formal assessment appeal process if you still disagree with the results.

 

Note that there are companies out there who will assist you with this process for a fee. But beware of the scammers who are approaching homeowners promising them a reduced tax bill. Don’t be fooled. Since the reassessment is free, using a service with a fee is up to you. Be aware that some property tax reductions may not be all that large and perhaps even less than the fee you pay.

Jeff great advice, I bet most homeowners have never thought of doing that.  This could make a big difference on the tax bill if they happen to be in a declining market.  Got to take some of the positives out of the negatives.

Well that's true, George. Years ago when they had the price drops many were able to take advantage of the tax reassessments, This time it is not so dramatic, but why not have the money in your pocket instead of them?
