Loggers Love DIY Forest Landowners

forest

Over the past 26 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning this lesson the hard way.

Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out.  They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process.

Forest

A forester knows how to;

  • Expertly market your timber to get you 400-1000% more money for your trees!
  • Mark the correct trees resulting in an increase in the value of the residual forest rather than a forest degradation!
  • Plan the timber sale so that the land will not be harmed from excessive rutting, damage to streams, and damage to residual trees.
  • Structure and administer a contract so that the clients’ interests are protected both financially and environmentally.
  • Determine which loggers are good and which are not.
  • Get the loggers to follow the rules, and not try to get away with shortcuts and extra trees.
  • Plan a timber sale for maximum Wildlife habitat.

When you go to court over something that may be worth $10K-100k, do you hire an Attorney or do you do it yourself, or hire a friend or relative.

forest

Most foresters handle hundreds of timber sales, and most do it yourselfers handle one, who do you think knows what they are doing, and which one do you think that the loggers will try to take advantage of?

If you care about your forest and your pocketbook, hire an experienced Consulting Forester.

Bob, you obviously know your logging market and owners would be smart to hire you, and experienced forester to handle the harvesting and sale of their trees.

Good morning Bob. Obviously, you have a passion for forestry and want folks to get the most out of their land.

Good morning. I wouldn't know the first thing about handling timber, so would definitely hire an expert to assist.  Certain things just don't lend themselves to DIY.

When I had my woods logged, I had 3 differeent companies out.  Then when the one I picked started, my dad was there almost all the time.  Good thinkg because otherwise they would have run amuk.  That was 15 years ago...wish I had know about you at that time.

Bob, you make a very good case for hiring an expert. But you are preaching to the choir. We already believe in hiring an expert vs doing it yourself. All you gotta do is read all the posts about FSBOs. We Believe.

BTW My "take-away" was that an expert pays rather than costs.

Bob, I have seen some neighbors/friends get hoodwinked by some unscrupulous loggers. I am a private forester, when we logged we had an the oldest most recognized logging operation come in and log. The project manager was very diligent that the plan was followed.

Bob Crane  Really fascinating stuff here ..you take the professional with you to court is my opinion ..but you see I am a big city girl I know nothing and I mean nothing about the forest except that I think we need to save it
