2008 Hurricane Forecast

I don't really want to think about it, but it's next to impossible to avoid -- hurricane season is less than two months away.

hurricaneAnd with it being so close, the forecasts for this season have begun to come out.

This year, Dr. William Gray and his noted team of forecasters at Colorado State University think that we are going to have a pretty active hurricane season.  Their numbers have been off the past couple of years, but they are using a new statistical model to come up with their predictions.

This year they are calling for a total of 15 named storms, eight hurricanes, and four major or intense Category 3, 4 or 5 hurricanes.

The team looked at conditions this year like warm seas and the potential for lower wind shear allowing more storm development.

I'm sure that as we get further into the season that the numbers will change.  But I'm hoping that we can steer clear of any major storms altogether!

Maria and Jim, I certainly hope that you all remain safe and that the season for these horrid wind storms are mild. I think there has been enough devastation to last us all for awhile.

I agree with Gena - stay safe!

These numbers are interesting - I've never paid attention to know what has been typical for the area - 15 named storms and eight hurricanes sound high. How does that compare to the last few years?

Maria and Jim, Thanks for the update, I think!  My daughter and her family moved to the Gulf Coast, MS.  They don't live too close to the water, but her husband is in the Navy and deployed, so a big storm would be tough on her.

Thanks Gena!  I completely agree that we have all seen our fair share (and then some) of devastation in the most recent past, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a very uneventful hurricane season!

Debbie: These numbers are right about where they usually are around this time of year.  As we get into the season is when they amend their prediction (sometimes multiple times) depending on whether or not we have seen much activity up to that point.

Virginia: A big storm would be really tough on your daughter, I'm sure.  I really hope that after the really bad season the Gulf saw a few years ago that they have lots of inactive seasons in their future.

Dione: We do thank you for your prayers.  And we'll say one in return for you to make it through the excessive heat you have to put up with every summer!
