Tony- Great point!  Take the model of communism.   In Cuba, for example, you wage is determined by the amount of education you have chosen to pursue.  You get paid more as a Doctor not because you are more important, but because you spend far more years studying your subject.

Here is the catch, though.  The difference in pay between a Teacher and a Doctor are absolutely minimal.

The difference in pay between a Teacher and a Janitor are absolutely minimal.

Get the point?

Believe me, I am not endorsing either Cuba or Communism.  What I am trying to point out is that one of the main influences in Western Culture is how much money you will make on your job.

Take a job you love for little pay, or take a job you hate for lots of pay.  I know what I would do.

After all, I am a member of this Western Culture. 

I took a job that I THOUGHT would have a big pay off.  And maybe one day it will, again.  Ironically enough, as I prepare for the pay off, and as I learn more about this vocation, I find myself relieved to have chosen a job I actually like.

Sometimes a backwards approach works as well.

Thanks for the comments...  I am not suggesting a not for profit situation or eliminating financial goals... I just think long term, your overall focus has to be broader than money.  I also find, that after I refocus on making a difference in other people's lives, I generally make plenty of money...funny how that works...
