I see Ratings and Reviews for Real Estate Agents and other professionals in most of the websites. I personally love Ratings and Reviews as it give me visibility of how a person has performed in the past and based on that I might make a decision to render that person's service. There are some websites/Companies whose Business Model Revolve(s) around these Ratings and Reviews. But recently I was searching for some Real Estate Agents in Dallas/Plano/Frisco area on Zillow/Trulia and to my surprise every one was rated a 5 Star Agent. I was under a great Dilemma on if everyone is a 5 star Agent then how will I decide? In the end I believe decision will be made based on lot of other factors including Strong Referral, number of closed transactions under belt, knowledgeable etc to name few.
Recently there have been plethora of companies who are trying to become creative in this field and adding the fact that the Agents or Professionals have been verified by a 3rd party system. I think that will add little more validity to these Reviews. If the professionals are able to promote these reviews and find a way to get in front of their prospective clients through social network or Search Engines then I have a feeling that it will help them to close the deal.
I will share a small story with you. I was having drinks with few friends, some of those folks were either trying to buy a new house or upgrade to a new one. While we were discussing about Ratings and Reviews of Professionals, one guy from the group came to me and said " I have never seen an Agent with a Bad Reviews. I wish People can add little more honesty in their reviews. I am sure no one is that perfect. BTW I dont like Color of your Shirt" ...And we laughed and moved on to the next conversation. This might be because the Client who has dealt with an Agent/professional doesnt want to hurt their Business by leaving bad reviews( if there are few moments where Client felt unsatisfied). Most of the Agents I know always go Above and Beyond to help their clients so it's no surprise that they get top ratings but I dont know all professionals.
