Well I'll be!

Well I'll be! I have seen pictures of stuff like this, never thought I'd see it though. A couple days ago I inspected a house right at the base of the Sandia Mountains. When I was on the roof, I got a great view looking either way! Anyway, back on task Mr Inspector...

This house was built in the 70's. Undoubtedly, there has been some tomfoolery going on here because when I got to the master bathroom I went into the water closet to check out the toilet. It flushed fine, was not loose on the floor... so I turned around to try the door to insure it latched.

What? Are you kidding me? The door hits the toilet bowl and does not close! Nice... at least it's in the master bathroom and you don't have to explain to your guests why they can't have any privacy!

But wait... your crack Home Inspector has the solution! Yes folks, that is not a problem here, we make custom fitted doors for just this type of problem!

It might be a hard sell, but then again, you wouldn't have the "door won't close" problem anymore! A small window shade to pull down after the door closes and presto... instant privacy!

The buyer merely laughed when I showed him the door hit the toilet bowl... I guess he knows the solution as well!

That is just too funny Fred! Makes me wonder what changes in the room led to this.

Lyn - Very good synopsis!

Debbie - Here's your sign!

Tom - I think a change in the toilet bowl size is the culprit, I guess they didn't check the door till the new toilet was bolted down...lol

How hard is it to sit on the pot and figure how much knee room is needed? SMH!! LOL!! I would be a little leery about the rest of the house since this is an obvious situation.

This is good one Fred. A person could easily pull the pins from the hinges and re-position the door and put the pins back in, however from the angle of the photo it appears it may be a tight squeeze to get into the bathroom with the door re-positioned. I got a kick out of your picture of the customized door. This is a perfect example of not viewing the whole situation for a solution. Changing the door frame to open the other way, into the Master bedroom, may be the best answer. Just a thought.

Bo - There are actually many solutions... but some of them not cost efficient. I like the pocket door idea, although it would be a larger job.  I had that custom cut door pic for a long time, I finally found a use for it! Have a great day!

At that point- I think I would take the door off if it is in the master bedroom!

I showed a house one time with a tib shower combo in the middle of it. There was a toilet on each side of the shower. At first glance I thought it had a mirror for a sliding door and I was seeing the reflection. On second glance I noticed it had a curtain on each side of the shower and they were both open. There was actually a tub stick out in the middle of the room with a toilet on each side of it.

I wish I would have taken a picture of it.

This is just too funny!  There are just so many logical ways to get around this issue that it's incredible to think that these people didn't do any of them.  Thanks for the laugh!

Good one, I have to hand it to the person who decided to carve a notch in his door, I would have done something much less interesting like reversed the door so that it would open outwards.
