Throwback Thursday | Roswell NM | Early 1970’s | Dad and I

This will be first Throwback Thursday post for me I believe. I decided to post the below picture and it shows my Dad and I in the early 1970’s in the backyard of their rental home in Roswell, New Mexico. I looked more closely and realized I was holding their Dog. I wish my Mom would have been in this picture but she took the picture. I have so few pictures of my Mom and Dad. I stumbled into this picture as I had forgot I had it.

The significance of the dog is that this poor little dog ( name escapes me)  was the apple of Moms and Dads life back then. This dog also loved me and was always wanting attention from me when I visited them.  The dog unfortunately contracted cancer and died. Both of my Parents were devastated and they essentially gave up wanting to live. I was living and working for a Big Eight CPA Firm in Chicago and I did everything I could do but it was impossible situation. Mom and Dad just felt there was nothing left to live for and gave up. My gigolo brother had disappeared from my parents lives many years earlier . from my life and from his children life. He was a piece of work. My parents felt constant anguish and suffered broken hearts due to my totally worthless brother.

Check out my hair, mustache, open shirt and the clothes in the picture! LOL.. Yes the pants were bell bottoms..  I guess without realizing I was copying the Rock stars of the day who played with open shirts while in concert! I was in excellent shape back in those days!

The key point is we all have to have a purpose to our lives and be continuous updating our goals or else we fall prey to what happened to my Mom and Dad. They had retired to live in Roswell and rented a cheap place on the old Air Force base as that was all they could afford. It was a dump but it was the only home they ever lived in. They both passed away in the same year less than 30 days apart. They had been married for about 53 years at the time of their death.

Bob,   I enjoy seeing pictures of 'the way we were'.  I think that Bruce Walter was correct about spouses passing soon after the first one does.  I imagine that your parents were very close.  Just think, they had 53 years together......amazing considering today's standards.

Bob, this may be the first Throwback Thursday post for you, but what a WHOPPER. Emotions all around...your parents dying so close together is something that I often hear about. Losing the reason for living, also is something I am quite aware of.

I also know a neighbor didn't in fact die until he knew that Bart, his big ole wonderful Chocolate Lab had a place to go...I found him a forever home with one of my dear neighbors whose home I sold later last summer. Bart was extremely overweight and when I walked him to the new home, thankfully it was all downhill! He collapsed in Jon's yard. Jon put him on a strict diet and he lost 40 lbs and is as happy as could be! Jon's roommate and bestfriend had just lost his dog a few months before, so Bart was the perfect solution for bringing that element back into their lives and I felt so happy to have found him a home as I LOVED Bart and I think his dad died in peace soon afterwards.

Bob,

I know things were tough but as you and I have said we wish we were together then we would have figured something out! I feel like I know your mom as she raised a wonderful man and I one I proud to call my husband!

I love looking through old photos. Seeing the outfits we wore, the cars we thought were cool, and the people in our lives that we have lost.

All the best to you! Jan

Ya gotta just love that hair, Bob!  There is something so unique about the color photos taken in the 1970s.  Over time they have changed hue, and it marks them as being part of that era.  I love it.

Thank you all for commenting. Writing the post brought back many memories some good and some bad. The bad were when I was helpless to do anything to assist my parents. I tried to get them to move to Houston but that did not work.

Bob, I'm sure you've heard this before, but it's not uncommon for elderly spouses to die within months of each other.  I think it probably happens more often when they were a very close couple and didn't form much of a life outside of themselves.  Putting aside how your parents may have felt about your brother, I'm certain they were very proud of you and what you did with your life.  Thanks for sharing the photo and story with us.
