The Top Ten Reasons to Live in Big Canoe, Georgia

The Mountains of Big Canoe as Seen From The Clubhouse

Big Canoe, Georgia is a very friendly and beautiful gated community known for its natural mountain setting. There is a peace and tranquility here that is hard to find in other areas of the country. Although there are many reasons to live in Big Canoe, here, in my opinion, are the top ten:

1) To Enjoy Mountain Living

Big Canoe is a wonderful community of 8,000 acres tucked up in the Mountains of North Georgia. The closest town is Jasper, which is a twenty minute drive. People who come to Big Canoe appreciate the fact that it is a mountain community, and that means we live side by side with nature. Residents of Big Canoe don’t have to deal with traffic and honking horns. The only honking we hear in Big Canoe might be the honking of geese as they fly overhead on their way to Lake Petit where they will swim a bit and search for food. Mountain living is peaceful and Big Canoe is a place to live if you are ready to give up the stress of city and town living and just live in one accord with the natural environment and creatures who also call this place their home.

2) It is Quiet and Tranquil

Once turning off Steve Tate Road, and past the stone pillars of the Big Canoe entrance, you can almost feel your body begin to relax as you realize you are leaving the “busyness” of the rest of the world behind. You know you are coming “home” to not only your actual physical house, but to this place of peace and tranquility. No lawns are allowed in Big Canoe, which helps keep the noise level down from lawnmowers. Lake Petit allows boats but only those that have electric motors, such as pontoon boats, or are propelled by manpower such as kayaks and canoes. As you sit on your back deck, the only noise you are likely to hear is the rustling of leaves as a squirrel scampers by. It is a quiet place where you can think and relax and leave the stress of the busy lifestyle behind.

3)  Change of Lifestyle

One of the reasons people move to Big Canoe in the North Georgia Mountains is to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world outside the gates. It is entirely possible to make one run to accomplish errands such as buying groceries and gas during the week, and then have everything else you need inside Big Canoe. There are beautiful homes here that offer scenic views of mountains, lakes or woods. There are two restaurants and a take-out snack bar. There are hiking trails and a fitness center. There’s even a library and a chapel all inside the gates of Big Canoe. There are lots of opportunities to stay active physically, mentally and spiritually. But there are also plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life

4)  Change of Career

Some people come to Big Canoe and leave their corporate careers behind them. They choose instead to follow their dreams of painting, writing or crafting. Others find a niche once they arrive such as becoming a pet sitter or real estate agent. Others make arrangements to telecommute from their offices. One of the opportunities that Big Canoe affords is the chance to have peace and quiet and re-evaluate what you want to do with the rest of your life.

5)  The Amenities

Big Canoe offers a world of activities inside its gates. There is golf, hiking, bike trails, tennis courts, a bocce court, a basketball court, and a fitness center. The fitness center offers fitness classes as well as weight machines and workout equipment. Attached to the fitness center is an indoor swimming pool, with a sauna and hot tub available. Big Canoe boasts two outdoor pools, racquetball courts, and lakes to swim, boat and fish in.

6) Opportunities to Join a Club

If you have a hobby or want educational experiences, you may want to join one of the many clubs that are offered in Big Canoe which cover everything from photography to travel to social activities. Joining a club is the quickest way to meet new friends and neighbors. If you want to stay busy, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Or if you want to just unplug and take it easy you can do that as well.

7) Big Canoe is Dog Friendly

Big Canoe is dog friendly so if you are a dog lover, you will be in good company. Not only are there two dog parks in Big Canoe, but one of the parks has an area for larger dogs and a totally separate large enclosed area for smaller dogs. Each dog park has a supply of small plastic bags so dog owners can clean up after their dogs to keep the dog parks and surrounding walking trails clear of “accidents”. Many Big Canoe residents can be seen walking their dogs on the miles of hiking trails within the property. I don’t know who enjoys these walks more, the dogs or their owners because they both look very happy on these trails.

Waiting for her owner to fnish taking the picture, Reeses waits on one of the walking paths.

Big Canoe residents love dogs so much they have even created a dog rescue facility within the Big Canoe gates, B.C.A.R (Big Canoe Animal Rescue) Dogs who have lost their way home or are roaming on the roads near the Big Canoe gates have a safe place to stay till retrieved by their owners, or adopted.

It often brings a smile to my face as I happen to notice a car driving along the roads of Big Canoe with a happy dog hanging out the window.

8)  Changing of the Seasons

One of the complaints I hear from friends who live in warmer climates such as Florida or California is that they don’t have a change of seasons and they miss that. You will have a change of seasons living in Big Canoe, and the best part is that the most pleasant ones are the longest ones so that allows more time to be outside enjoying hiking and tennis and golf. Winter is approximately two months long, encompassing mostly January and February. We have four seasons of natural beauty in Big Canoe and each one is as beautiful as the one before it. If you like variety in your seasons, Big Canoe is the place for you!

9) It’s Not a 55+ Community

Someone once told a friend of mine that living in a 55+ community is depressing. She often looks out her windows and sees an ambulance at a neighbor’s house. One of the perks of Big Canoe is that it is not a 55+ community and families live here with their children, along with adults of all ages. There is a nice community atmosphere within the Big Canoe gates and it includes people of all ages where young can learn from their elders, and vice versa.

10) The Big Canoe Community is Like Family

No matter what the trouble is, Big Canoe is filled with people willing to help. An amateur photographer friend of mine is always pleasantly surprised when she stops her car to take a picture of the beauty of Big Canoe, and a passing car stops to ask if she needs help. If you need a referral for someone to clean your gutters, your neighbors here will give you valuable referrals that will save you money. People in Big Canoe are always willing to help others here because we all came to Big Canoe for a purpose and realize how blessed we are to live in this wonderful community.

So there you have it, the top ten reasons to live in the naturally beautiful and tranquil gated community that is Big Canoe, Georgia.

Rosemarie, what a wonderful and detailed description of what it is like to live in Big Canoe, GA.  It is appealing as it does have the change of seasons unlike South Florida!  Are the North Georgia mountains high enough in elevation that it would not be so dreadfully hot and sweltering like the lowlands and plains area of Georgia?

So, if someone is not yet retired, and wants to relocate, what kind of job opportunities are there, nearby? How far?

Within driving distance is Cumming, Alpharetta, Canton and even Atlanta where residents commute every day.  Searching for jobs in the healthcare field or tech field will turn up many opportunities.  Cumming is about 40 minutes, Alpharetta is 50 minutes and Atlanta is an hour drive.

Many people create their own jobs here or telecommute.

Bruce...we enjoy the cool evening air at night with temperatures of at least 5-7 degrees cooler than Atlanta.  The South is known for it's humidity, but we live in the lush forest.  Higher elevations here in Big Canoe are even cooler with a gentle breeze always blowing.
