In view of the fact that 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Delaware preservationists from all 3 counties got together last week to see how we could celebrate this significant legislation. This was our second meeting, the first being held at the Hale-Byrnes House, outside of Wilmington.
The act created the National Register of Historic Places, the list of National Historic Landmarks, and the State Historic Preservation Offices. Our goal is to re-energize Delaware’s (and America’s) interest in the preservation of our architectural heritage to better preserve our cultural legacy and to make a positive impact on the future.
There is a real value in having a unified grassroots effort to get something done to bring Delawareans together to focus on preserving our built environment in 2016. Too many of our historic buildings are being allowed to decay or even worse, being demolished, and our goal is to bring an awareness that our history is being destroyed, building by building, all in the name of progress (or greed).
