What industry can you fail in 70% of the time and be considered a super star?

Listening to an interview on a book review I heard an interesting analogy. What industry can you fail in 70% of the time, be a super star and do what you love? The book was about baseball. A hitter who's batting average is consistently over 300 is considered a super star in baseball. Which means 70% of the time he fails to hit the ball.

Browsing the internet I came across a sales statistics chart. When you relate this to the real estate industry the same holds true. REALTOR'S® hear the word "No!", many times before a sale is made. and I know most agents love what they do.

Depending on the specific market , the ratios 70 / 30 , 80 / 20 or 90 / 10 ring true. 30% of the agents do 70% of the business etc... And those agents are considered the "heavy hitters" or super star sale people in their respective markets.

As the General Sales Manager of a family owned real estate firm that has been doing business in the same location for over 35 years. We have seen many agents come and go , and some  return again. Just like in baseball , we train our agents to become super stars, by facilitating a condition for agents to become productive. I feel fortunate to be part of something special every day with a sales team working harmoniously. We get to "make a difference", help shape dreams and in doing so many benefit from what we do.

Spring is here and it's time to play ball !

I thought you were going to talk about Meteorologists... they can mis-predict the weather, but still keep their jobs.

Having said that... your chart speaks volumes about why so many people fail to make it in the real estate business.

Buzz - It is obvious that persistence pays off. Like in most sales positions, you must be willing to hear "no" a lot more often than "yes".

Great way to bring people back to your blog and I am so glad I read it.  I had no idea it was baseball players, but then again, I am not a huge sports fanatic.  I really enjoyed your content and the information shared about sales people.  Persistence does pay off, and we just have to keep plugging away, even after a "no."

Buzz,

Good analogy with baseball!   I had always heard that 20% of agents did 80% of the sales, so if now it is 30% then maybe there has been improvement?
