Beach Sand Replenishing in Carlsbad California 2015

Despite humankind’s best efforts, Mother Nature, the ocean, and the tides tend to do what they want to do. That means shifting sands on the Carlsbad beaches.

Replenishing the sand on the Carlsbad beaches is a regular project taken on by the City of Carlsbad in conjunction with Cabrillo Power 1 LLC, owner of the nearby Agua Hedionda lagoon.

Replenishing the sand on the Carlsbad beaches

The current replenishment project in north Carlsbad began in November of 2014 and part of the regular dredging of the nearby Agua Hedionda Lagoon by the Encina Power Station. The dredging is done to aid the flow of ocean water needed for cooling the power plant. Some of the beach sand ends up on the lagoon which creates a sand bar.

The dredged sand helps to replenish the nearby Carlsbad beaches across from the power plant and running North to Tamarack Avenue south of Carlsbad Village. The current phase is the last of 3 and due to be completed this spring before the busy summer months.

Mother Nature packs a mighty punch and it's good that we can help repair and replenish some of the damage.  Hope you're having a great weekend, Jeff. D

Jeff Dowler CRS wonderful project to reinforce the beaches and safety...

I do hope it isnt interfering with any turtle nests ..here on the East coast we have nests marked this time of yr..I suspect no turtles were harmed as there are too many good people watching out to protect and preserve ! have a great weekend!

Debb Janes - indeed. It's nice to seen the mutual benefits from this process every 3-4 years. And the weekend has been great

Hannah Williams - it's an essential thing to do with the shifting sand and erosion from water and weather

Michele Connors - I think that's why they do this at this time of year so it does not disrupt nesting from the area wildlife

Thanks for sharing this information and your photographs.

We lived on the oceanfront at Virginia Beach for many years and they had the same problems of development too close to the shore line. We watched sand being pumped for years.

Jeff,

So glad the city helps to keep its beauty.  We don't have that problem here, and we do have a tractor daily that smooths the beach...We love our ocean, and I am always amazed at the vastness of it, when I look it from Hawaii or any other place where it is part of that nation like Japan for instance.  A

Roy Kelley - the issue in our area seems to be the tides and winds that move the sand around - in some areas there is no development on the beaches at all. But it's an issue along the entire coastline

Ron & Alexandra Seigel - well we are all thankful, too, that someone watches out for it and works at preservation, and the Coastal Commission and various environment groups help as well.

Well this is something I never thought about. I didn't thing about eroding sand and how that might impact beaches. I thought this was a normal process. Does your town have to build up the sand to keep a certain wave flow?

Yes, an ongoing effort to keep our beaches, Jeff.  I'm not sure this is something we will ever beat nature with.

Hi Jeff Dowler CRS ,  When we go to the beach (or when we used to) we never thought about the work that goes into allowing us to have fun in the sand.

Debbie Laity  - the waves do what they want. We must work with them to the best of our ability. The beach will change dramatically each year depending on winds, storms, etc. It can actually become quite narrow and completely covered by water at high tide

Gabe Sanders  - it's an on-going challenge for sure

Larry Johnston  - the beaches can change pretty significantly even in a matter of weeks dues to tidal changes, storms, and winds. We appreciate all the city does to preserve our coastline
