Rock N Roll, Drugs and Death

I remember as a teen, Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll was the rebels cry and usually said as a kind of "Badge Of Honor" in the 60's and early 70's. What a shane.

Yesterday I was headed to an appointment on the edge of our MLS, about 45 minutes out. I slipped in a CD of one of my old favorites, Television, Marquee Moon.

Television Marque Moon

Television is one of those off the wall bands that had HUGE critical acclaim but just never hit the commercial scene. Wikki has some interesting history on the band and it did make several of the really big name lists as one of the most influential bands of all time.

It got me thinking, what happened to those guys. Well from what I could make of it they are still all alive and the band has had break ups and new members have come and gone but they are still know to appear now and then. What came as a surprise to me is during one of the break ups another band from that era that I also played loud and proud had two members join temporarily.

Ney York Dolls To Much To Soon

The New York Dolls is a whole another story. Again a band on the cutting edge with a ton of talent. These boys could ROCK. Today only 2 of the original 5 are alive. What a shame.

I love playing some of the old rock for my kids, ages 13 and 14, and every time I do it lets me teach them about how drugs have destroyed so much talent. They love the music and even ask what happened to that music, why did it disappear in the 80's and why isn't there anything like it today? I can't answer that. Was it all said in the 60's and 70's?

William Feela I've actually moved to country when I'm not listening to Christian radio. Today's country is a lot like the old rock I used to love.

So right you are Fred Griffin .

Troy Erickson Television is totally unique so you will either appreciate their guitar skills or hate them. The New York Dolls remind me of Kiss and I wonder how much they influenced Kiss.

That's music from my era also. At 63, I've heard lots of styles and artists come and go. I even worked in the music industry for a fair portion of my adult life. Why'd the music go away? Simple, it always does. Big Band gave away to Sinatra, Blues gave way to Elvis, and the King was swamped by the Beatles, and so on. Times change and our children developer they're own identity partly by the music they listen to. Like many things, music evolves, not always to our liking.

You nailed it David. I think what my 14 year old daughter was looking for is that she doesn't see today's music as inventive. I envoy you that you got to work with the music field. I have a great ear for music but zero talent to produce it.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm , Yes there was a lot of great talent lost over the years because of drugs.  There is still a lot of that to overcome in the adults, as well as the youth.

Larry Johnston when you have no outstanding gift like me it's really hard to understand why people who were so blessed self destruct. Perhaps they never figured out who gave them that gift???

Bob - many of the names in the 60's died during the 60's from drugs.  Those were the days of top 40 stations.  Some of the groups are still alive and on Social Security and doing concerts.  Think Beach Boys and Rolling Stones.

Grant, the Rolling Stones will always be my favorite band. You know they do it for the love of the music, nobody performs for 50 years if the love isn't there and they made their millions decades ago.
