Rock N Roll, Drugs and Death
I remember as a teen, Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll was the rebels cry and usually said as a kind of "Badge Of Honor" in the 60's and early 70's. What a shane.
Yesterday I was headed to an appointment on the edge of our MLS, about 45 minutes out. I slipped in a CD of one of my old favorites, Television, Marquee Moon.
Television is one of those off the wall bands that had HUGE critical acclaim but just never hit the commercial scene. Wikki has some interesting history on the band and it did make several of the really big name lists as one of the most influential bands of all time.
It got me thinking, what happened to those guys. Well from what I could make of it they are still all alive and the band has had break ups and new members have come and gone but they are still know to appear now and then. What came as a surprise to me is during one of the break ups another band from that era that I also played loud and proud had two members join temporarily.
The New York Dolls is a whole another story. Again a band on the cutting edge with a ton of talent. These boys could ROCK. Today only 2 of the original 5 are alive. What a shame.
I love playing some of the old rock for my kids, ages 13 and 14, and every time I do it lets me teach them about how drugs have destroyed so much talent. They love the music and even ask what happened to that music, why did it disappear in the 80's and why isn't there anything like it today? I can't answer that. Was it all said in the 60's and 70's?
