Locate a room in your home that is quite and out of the way of major foot traffic. When creating a meditation room or temple room, that space is to be respected and the energy conserved for stillness and reflection. Upon entering take off your shoes as a sign of respect and also to help your energy become rooted.
- Bring in imagery that you personally connect with to help you focus in on "calming" your energy. The image above displays Buddha's and the various objects that associate with this form of spirituality and meditation. Find what works for you. This example is from The Dipamkara Meditation Center.
- Keep the room simple, as that is a reflection of your minds focus. If you allow too much "clutter" or items that do not associate with that intention of use for your meditation room, you potentially take away from it's main purpose of use. Honor that energy.
- Create a simple meditation altar. This give you a focal point and place to honor your god, deities, animal spirits, what have you, during your meditation. It also allows them a place to enter with ease to help assist you when meditation and healing.
- On your altar, to begin, have at least 4 of the main elements present. Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. Also have a ceremonial cloth (preferably red) to honor the elements. On top of the cloth you could place a statue that you meditate or pray to (meditation is prayer and vis versa).
Earth can be a Crystal or stone that has special meaning to you. Wind can be sage. Fire can be white candle for purity. Water can be a bowl of water, blessed water (holy water) or the accent color.
- Have a small area rug at the foot of the altar to honor that sacred space. Some may choose to sit up right, lay down or even stand when meditating. Discover which version works for you and that will indicate the type of seating needed.
- Lighting is also important, you want low light (perhaps on dimmers the are gentle to turn on and off) because the bring the energy down in a good way.
