Easter Lily - Beautiful But Not Good For Your Cat

Easter Lily - Beautiful But Not Good For Your Cat.

All Lilies are deadly to cats according to Dr. Marty Becker of Pet Connection. No-one seems to know why but all parts of the Lily; perhaps even the pollen can cause severe kidney failure in cats.  This can be a very expensive trip to the Vet’s office and days of worry.

Easter Lily - Beautiful But Not Good For Your Cat

The Poison Control Center says beware of the following in particular:

tiger lilies, day lilies, Asiatic hybrids, Japanese show lilies, rubrums, stargazers, red, Western and wood lilies and lilies of the valley.

My husband’s aunt used to bring us an Easter Lily each year when we had the family to dinner. At that time, I had no idea that my cats were in danger.  Lucky for all of us, none of my cats chewed on or were interested in plants.  These days I do not have Lilies anywhere near my home; inside or out. Yes, they are incredibly beautiful but my cat’s health is more important.

Have a wonderful Easter with your family and your cats!

Good morning Toni,

We did not know this and will have to try and keep an eye on the cat.

Make yourself a great day.

I have just recently learned of this danger, and it came as an informal discussion. I think many need to be aware of this fact Toni Weidman .

I don't have a cat but such an important warning Toni.  Do they have the same effect on doggies?

Toni,

I love its look, however, I find the scent cloying!  And whenever someone has sent them to us, the pollen stems have been nipped, as they stain.  I was not aware that they are harmful to cats.  Our cats ignored them, as well as the day lillies we had on the border of our driveway.  A

Toni: I love lillies but do not have them anywhere near the house for the reason you mention...my kitties are precious and I do not want them getting sick (or dying).

Toni, that is good to know!  I knew that many Christmas plants are not cat friendly, but nothing about Easter Lilies - or other lilies for that matter.

I had no idea that Easter Lilies were dangerous to cats.  I've certainly put a lot of felines at peril over the years.

This is a good reminder for pet owners that many plants and flowers may present risks for their pets.
