We post our vacancies on Craigslist along with a lot of other companies and individuals in Sacramento, CA.
Last week I was contacted by a prospective tenant that wanted to know if the owner of the house we were renting was located in Africa. The prospect told me he responded to a Craiglist ad and was told he could send funds to the owner directly. He drove by the house and saw our HomePointe For Rent sign on the property. He called me. I assured him that our property management company did not have an owner that was using us and living in Africa and placing his own ads.
It turns out that some identity thieves are copying some of our ads (and probably others) and inserting their own contact information. They then try to collect application fees and move in funds from the prospects. We do not think they are trying to get keys, so the rental property is most likely being rented sight unseen.
This week we saw a different ad that was clearly our property with different contact information. We contacted the police and Craigslist about this. Both the police and Craigslist are investigating.
All landlords and property management companies should get to their properties several times a week just to make sure no one is attempting to move in under this scheme.
Tenants, be aware and suspicious of anyone that does not have access to the home they are advertising. Even if they do, make sure everything appears legitimate. Working with a known company is the safest method.
