Relocating To Houlton Maine. Need A Job To Work. Where Do I Turn For Employment?

For starters, many job searches in Aroostook County start with the local newspaper.  The Houlton Pioneer Times will have a few employment ads, but the tradition in this area of Aroostook County is to stop in or call the Career Center.

That office has a book with a number of job opportunities to consider.  The Bangor Daily News would also have an employment section and career fairs are going on now in Maine.  The weekend's edition would also be more populated with jobs possibilities.  But in Houlton Maine, watching the local paper for a job would be a limited way to tackle the problem.  The Career Center takes down the requirements and perks an employer has to offer and applicants go thru this "clearing house" to save everyone time.  When I hired a new secretary 17 years ago, or previous to that when a job spot needed filling, I just let the Career Center or a variation of the name, as the title has changed over the years, what I was looking for.  We did three or four interviews, did not have phones ringing from every Tom, Dick and Harry.  And quickly, efficiently, had our employee without missing a beat.

If you search for job options in Houlton, Maine you get a ton of generic job sites.

A few have a job here for Houlton Regional Hospital's search for a surgeon, and another looking for drivers for FedEX. Check out the Maine Career Center site for jobs for youth, trade fair events, retraining employment options for Maine and much more here. Like many places, when a business needs a job slot filled, they need it done now.  So if you are in Houlton, circulating with your resume and are able to visit the work place live and in color, that is usually the person who gets the job quickly.  A person out of state is at a disadvantage because a phone call and email is great, but the business owner that needs a slot filled wonders if the worker is really going to move to Houlton Maine, and if that relocation is going to happen or not and when! This isn't related to the employment prospects in Houlton, but is a relocation question.  Would you know whether there is a quilt/fabric shop anywhere near Houlton?  I don't find anything in the yahoo yellow pages, and I think the nearest Joann fabrics is pretty far away.  Just curious...if your wife or mother isn't a quilter or someone who sews, you probably wouldn't know the answer to this.

Hey...how do you know I am not a quilter? (smile) McLaughlins Textile in Houlton was the place to go for many moons.  But has closed. Walmart has quite a selection of fabric though and you should check with store number 1974 here in Houlton for the goods! Good luck!
