Flip Video Failure To Flip Video Success!!

Just in case you have not read my post on how I somehow failed in making my first video in Bob Stewart's group of guinea pigs and how I wondered why I was the only little guinea pig in this experiment who did not get it, you can read it here.

On Monday, Brad Andersohn called me to work out the issues I was having. We were on the phone for 2 hours. Where we left on in the last post is that my screen was coming up black when I uploaded the video to Mixpo, which is the online video place we are using for this experiment. I am glad that so many of you read the post because if even one of you runs into this problem you will know how to fix it without throwing your flip video camera out of the window. Please make sure that before you start using your Flip Video camera that you read Brad Andersohn's tutorial step by step guide on how to use the camera.

And FYI, I am blonde but I did not leave the lens cover on the camera because the camera does not have a lens cover!

First let me give you my review of the Flip Video camera itself, now that I can use it and have been using it to take video of different places and people.

The Flip Video Camera:

Positives +

  • Light as a feather! I love how light this camera is. Absolutely amazing. I don't get tired carrying it around.
  • Battery Operated! Make sure to keep extra AA batteries with you. It only takes 2 batteries. How convenient is that!
  • Nice Case and carrying handle come with it. You can put it on your wrist.
  • Very Cute, Stylish and Appealing! Like people will say, gee, I want one of those!
  • Quality Images! I am absolutely stunned at how great the images come out. You will impress your sellers!
  • Compact, yet has all you need. This is probably the best feature. You don't have to lug around a bunch of stuff.
  • USB pop out! WOW! I love that little USB. You just flick it and it pops out and you plug it in your USB port of your computer. How simple is that!

Negatives -

  • Red Button is temperamental. Sometimes I have to press a couple of times to start or stop the video. Hard To Read Directions! Hey, send the magnifying glass along with the instructions!
  • No download instructions with the teeny tiny manual! This is the point frustration and the source we found of my black screen.
  • The text in the little tiny instruction guide that comes with the camera is TOO small to read. They need to send a magnifying glass with it. I have an issue with product development when they don't take Baby Boomers in to consideration.

So all in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives. IT IS A KEEPER!

I can feel right now that this is going to get very addicting. I am already taking it with me looking around for things to shoot. I don't always take my Sony Camcorder with me even though it is very small and since the video is right on DVDs, well, I have not gotten around to finalizing all the DVDs and so they just sit there and don't get enjoyed. With the Flip Video Nestor and I have already sat down to watch video I took of my son today right on our computer! It was SO easy.

Now what was the problem? Pay attention to this because all computers are different and funny things can happen. The first rule is that when you plug your camera into your computer for the first time do not walk away from your computer like I did! Stay there to make sure your software downloads! I got up to do something thinking the software would just download itself and for some computers that would be the case but mine decided not to install the software that day and since I had not seen any directions regarding downloading the software I did not know if there was going to be an icon or what. So make sure that when you put that USB port into your computer and it does not download the software, go to your MY COMPUTER and click on the Flip Video Icon and download the software ALL THE WAY.

When Brad and I were working on this we just went to the file with the videos in it to add them to Mixpo and when we did all of that, the video was still audio and NO video. Since I was going to be using the Mixpo software we did not realize that we still would need the Flip Video software! But sometimes things don't make sense. After I downloaded the Flip Video software, we saw the images! When you go to MY COMPUTER and click on Flip Video, make sure you click on the READ ME file and read it! There are only 10 very short steps in that read me guide so it won't take long to read.

I have two videos that I did and am now editing them in Mixpo. But I will not post them here on this post since they are Keyword rich videos for us to get Google juice and some more listings. I will post them on another post so be sure to keep your eyes attached to my blog so you can see the finished product.

Mixpo is the coolest video software I have seen and worked with. There are so many things you can do with Mixpo. You don't ever have to be in your own video if you do not want to be. You also have a huge library of images, movies and stills that you are allowed to use in your production. The most important thing that you can do with Mixpo is you can use links right in the video itself so someone can click on the video and be taken to wherever you say they are going to go. No other software can do that. I will post more about what you can do with Mixpo later.

So remember the lesson learned: Make sure you download the entire software for Flip Video and make sure it is on your computer before you add your movie files!!!

I'm glad you got it working!!  I told you once you got through it that you would do a good job in helping others.  I am really interested in the camera and software.  If its really that easy, I would like to start using it to include videos in my posts and on my website.

Rebecca- This biggest challenge is carving out the time to do the editing. It is easy but there is still the initial time you need to learn the software. Wow, that was a quick comment, I just clicked the submit button!

Kimberly- That is why I thought it was important to post about my process of learning this. After I learned what I did wrong I could easily see many others making that same mistake and get frustrated. The camera is so little, it fits in my briefcase and bag, it is light, it does not drag you down and I just grabbed it to film my grandbaby discovering her voice for the first time! Precious! Will have to post that one too!

'Glad you finally figured this out, but I think I'll wait 'til they have a larger viewing screen - or buy another manufacturer's product.  1.5 inches is way smaller than I want!

Katerina, I just got my Flip Video in the mail today (as a prize from placing in the Active Rain video contest).  I've unpacked it.  Read the instructions (takes about 18 seconds), and turned it on to make sure it works.  Looking forward to experimenting a bit this weekend.

Thanks for tip, I literally just walked in the door with a Flip. Been fighting with the crazy HD video camera for months trying to be "perfect", saw the Flip at Target and figured why not!

Thanks for info above sounds like it will make my Friday night a lot saner!

Katerina - I just bought my Flip Video this week and you are so right. If I had not read Brad's great instructions, I'm sure I would have made the same mistake. Positives outweigh the Negatives and I really like my new tool. Lesson learned, thank you.

Katerina, thanks for the very informative post on the flip video.  I had to laugh at your comment about being blonde and not leaving the lens cap on.  My ex-wife took many videos in the old day with that darn lens cap on...she never could remember to take it off.  And yes, she was blonde.  LOL

I'm encouraged I feel like I need to have others have some success before I attempt to tackle something new. I'm off to the store tomorrow to try it. Thanks for sticking with it.

Margaret- It actually works well. I can see this screen better than I can my Sony Camcorder which has a larger screen. I still use my Sony for still shots until I get my dream Nikon. I just posted my first video and tomorrow I am posting a very short clip of my granddaughter discovering her different voices.

Brian- Well, your glasses are better than mine! My main gripe is the small print and not enough directions. Have fun with your flip video this weekend! I am sure you will be posting some great videos, you are such an attention to detail type of person. I can't wait til you have kids so you don't have all this time to do all of this, hehehe, :)

Karen- This Flip video camera is really cool. I use my Sony Camcorder for all my still shots until I get my new Nikon!

I thought the record button was temperamental too, then I read that you just need to hold it down for a second, not just push it.  There is also a pdf you can download from their site that is easier to read and you can zoom in if you need to see bigger fonts. The final negative is that most people just don't see the readme file (including me) when they first plug in the camera.  Now that we addressed all the negatives, that makes it 100% a positive investment!  :-)  Great post, and thanks for the mention and link love too!  You're the best!!  :-)

Brad- Yes, it is all good now! Thanks for all your help! I will try to hold that red button down for a second the next time. I posted my first video  I used one of the movie scenes for 8 seconds at the beginning. I tried to add text but it repeated the text on top of each other and then I could not get it to delete, so I started it all over again without the text.

Katerina:  OK so I bought the FLIP and I do love it.  I am using the Muvee software with it and have started working with Windows Movie Maker and have them all down pretty well and I see Brad and Mixpo announcement.  In your opinion, is it worth the $29/month investment for the added benefits?  Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me!

Steve- I am just learning the Mixpo software but is has benefits that you will not find on Muvee or Windows. There is strong  linking with Mixpo and all your stats and click information is all right handy, right there. That is my favorite part. The other part that I like is that there is a lot of add ons and you can voice overs and many other cool things that I have not learned how to do it all yet.

Also, it will be added on to AR platform which Google will love! Check it out! Katerina
