Each home is indeed distinct.

Even houses which are built with the same plans are occupied by very diverse persons and require different solutions.

An excellent house stager who knows how to address the precise issues involved with each individual house as well as with each unique home owner is the best solution to being sure that any given house is in fact prepared to be the best in today’s market.

The needs and desires of the house seller must be addressed in ways which will help him through the process with the least amount of stress possible. Finding ways to produce best solution design plans while also establishing home seller well being is a skill held by a well informed and responsible home stager who will guide with balance throughout the process.

Knowing when to hold fast to the home staging plan and when to bend to the perceived needs of the home seller will insure the best outcome.

Once again the myth that home staging is only about making a space look pretty is shot to the ground.

I thought this was explicitly specific and oh, so true!  well done!  Try saying "SPECIFIC, EXPLICIT"  three times really fast.  I could not.

Right on!  Sometimes staging is more about problem solving than interior design.   Helping the seller's live in their home and keep it looking great throughout the process may be the biggest challenge!

Kim, you are right! When I first started I thought I would be laughing a lot with my happy clients. I didn't know there were times I would be crying with a distraught client instead. Don't you just love the challenge?

Yup, yup, yup!  You said it Yvonne. Knowing what our sellers are going through is called empathy. We are in a "people" industry... we need to see through their eyes sometimes in order to help them.

Great post!

Thank you to you too Virginia! Wouldn't those views be awesome. But, then to have to go downstairs and outside to use the phone might be a bit of a nuisance. Good to see you stopping in.

I think the empathy part is an essential quality to a successful home stager. I do, however, struggle with sellers who call mein then do not want to implement a single idea I present - they are still very defensive about the house and how they decorated it. I still carry on and give them the suggestions they contracted me to do, and try to talk them through the benefits of staging. I then hope that after I leave they will take the time to go through the report and the checklist, and see how it only helps with the selling process. Sometimes I think I should go for a psychology degree!

Gabriele, yes! When you know that the pink and purple wallpaper your client simply adores is not going to be a hit with the home buying populace it is sometimes difficult to get from point A to point B with the staging plans. Being firm when necessary and being understanding when appropriate is what will set apart the true professional from the person who simply dabbles. And yes, sometimes it means washing your hands and walking away. But, oh how glorious it is when you are able to explain the principle behind the suggestion and see the light bulb go off in your clients head. Then it is worth it.

I always say that successful home staging is about balance. Balance between what is neutral and what is warm and inviting, what will help sell the home and what will allow the family to continue living here somewhat comfortably. EVERY situation is completely unique.

Yes Tori Lynn, balance is necessary! It is fun to look for ways to creatively keep the balance and still help the home seller in every way possible.
