To the inspectors out here.

Are you checking Supply Air and Return Air temperatures when furnaces are in operation?

If not, how can you tell if it is raising the temperature of the air within the range indicated on the furnace?

This is probably not in any SOP but it is a very easy check to determine if that function is working and the house will be heated when called on.

There are numerous reasons the temperature is not what it's supposed to be and the test may allow you to call out for service when generally we would not.

I'm looking for othe simple test that indicate issues.

I use a laser thermometer at all air registers and the return air grill.  It's fast and easy.

That is what I do also, however, I sometimes question the accuracy of doing it that way, because we are not actually measuring the air temperature, but rather the grille or ductwork temperature. Do you think there is that much difference?

You sort of need to do it this way to verify if you have flow to all required habitable areas.  I use a non-contact infrared thermometer as well.  Just be aware that if you use a cheap one, you need to get real close or the reading will be wrong.

I use a good hygro thermometer with a probe that can be insert in front of the filter and then placed in front of the closest vent.  Gives temp and humidity.
