Sea Lion Pups are Coming Ashore on California Beaches

By
Real Estate Agent with Sharon Paxson, Realtor® EQTY Forbes Global Properties 01501912

So far this year, over 2000 sea lion pups that have washed ashore. There are a couple of reasons as to why. According to scientists, the water is warmer, and there is less food, so therefore the Mother's leave their babies longer in search of food, and they cannot survive or fend for themselves. These babies are washing ashore in record numbers.

"Scientists believe warmer coastal waters force the prey of sea lions — squid and sardines, for example — deeper beneath the ocean’s surface. Then nursing sea lion mothers must look further afield for food, leaving their pups for longer than normal. Deprived of sustenance and weakened, the pups limply wash ashore." (source Washington Post).

Another reasons is that the area has been overfished for sardines, and authorities are considering imposing a ban on fishing for the sardines. The sardine population has declined by 90% since 2007.

Why not consider helping these sea lions, and donations can be made to the Marine Mammal Center and they also have a wish list of items that they need in order to help to take care of these sea lions. Some of the items they need include pedialyte (unflavored), Dawn detergent, trash bags, paper towels, sponges, gas cards. For more information on their wish list, please view their website.

If you encounter a sea lion or sea lion pup on the beach, please notify the authorities or a local lifeguard. They are sick and malnourished. Please leave them alone, do not touch them, poke, pour water on or try to put back in the water. And if you see someone trying to touch one, please inform authorities

Pease consider donating to help these animals, or donate some items for their wish list.

HI Frank Rubi, MBA - Newport Beach does have a lot to offer, unfortunately the sea lion pups are sick and malnourished, and hope they will be rescued and this trend of them coming to shore stops.

Hi Sharon, what a cute Sea Lion. Something we have done to our environment has caused this. I hope something can be done.

HI Noah Seidenberg - I read yesterday they are considering imposing a ban on some of the fishing which has impacted the sea lion population food source. I hope it goes through, but I am sure there will be other environmental impact as a result.

Sharon Paxson ~ this is so sad! I know that the fish wildlife preserve is doing everything they can do help the little guys out once they come onto shore, but nevertheless we need to more and we need to protect their food source

So very sad to see & hear about this.  Overfishing is such a big problem, hopefully some legislation can get passed.  I'm all about being able to fish, but reducing a population by 90% in a few years?  That's beyond overkill.

It is horrible to hear this, Sharon. When I lived there in the '70s and '80s, sea lions never came ashore. Sometimes they'd crawl into yachts in Newport Bay but mostly they just hung out at the bell. They should probably restrict fishing. We are using up all of our natural resources because there are too many people in the world, but I don't have a solution for that.

Sharon,

We have a seal rookery in Carpinteria, and I bet they are taking care of these sea lion babies.  We have plenty of sardines here,  we see them when we cross the channel on the beach, and fishing is good...I would definitely contribute  to that. A

HI Jon Kolsky - I know there are some local groups on FB who are trying to raise money in their behalf. And at least donating to their wish list, would help them. I currently do that now at the Wildlife Wetlands and Preserve in Huntington Beach.

Hi John Meussner - overfishing is a problem, and it is so obvious now, and it is all up and down the coast.

Hi Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents - it is sad to see for sure, and hoping that this ban is enacted without too many other ramifications.

Sharon, Gosh what a shame this is happening and the over fishing of sardines by the big companies I am sure is one of the main cuprits creating this issue.

Good morning Sharon. I hate to have that about the sea lion pups. I hate to say it, but California is in bad shape. Warmer than normal waters and a severe drought is a recipe for disaster.
