Koki'o ke'oke'o Aloalo - White Hibiscus

We are blessed with a bounty of tropical flora in Hawai'i and the Hawaiian people as a whole revel in the natural beauty of the 'Aina (land). As native Hawaiians we celebrate the natural beauty of our environment through  Mele (song) and Hula (dance) and in modern times the love for our flora is manifest in our Hawaiian Fashion's such as our colorful Aloha Shirts and Mu'u mu'u's. This serial post will host some of our revered and celebrated blossoms that have inspired artists, lovers, and poets in times past and today.

Koki'o ke'o ke'o Hibiscus

One of Hawaii's 5 endemic species of Aloalo or Hibiscus - Koki'o ke'oke'o.

This rare, federally listed endangered species is one of only 2 varieties of fragrant Hibiscus in the world(both are endemic to Hawaii) and originates from the Waimea Valley on the Garden Island of Kauai. Drought resistant, this variety of Aloala should be on the top of the list of endemic plants to add to your landscaping, here in Hawai'i nei. If you would like more information on going native in your yard, or need design ideas don't hesitate to contact me regarding indigenous and endemic plantings that support our amazing and embattled environment. Planting a Koki'o ke'o ke'o can go a long way to beautify your world, conserve water, and help restore our threatened native species.

In Ancient Times:

Celebrated in song and legends for it's fragrance, the flower buds of the White Hibiscus where often used as a laxitive and the plant fiber twisted into cordage.

It's amazing how some flower of such beauty still yet has other uses beyond it's life.

Truly showing the multiple values which nature provides.

That blossom is so pristine and elegant, Kimo!  But then, so many things about Hawaii are perfect and beautiful.  Here's praying for the longevity of this endangered flower!

Aloha Claude, as masters of self-sustainability, ancient Hawaiians made attempts to co-exist with everything. Finding multiple uses for renewables such as plants and animals, insured an efficient use of resources and a sacrosanct symbiotic relationship with the environment. The West often sites the Biblical impression that mankind has dominion over the Earth and therefore can use it as a toilet in the endless quest to exploit it's limited resources, with the intent of satiating the greed of man. May Christendom be raptured quickly, so all those misbegotten bigots, racists, and false prophets only for profits, can reap what the have sown. It was the children of missionaries that brought Mono-culture to Hawaii and destroyed our hard won sustainability and replaced it with lots of sugar, canned pineapples, more automobiles than people, and institutionalized hypocrisy.

Aloha Myrl, thanks for commenting, unfortunately many people are more interested in paving paradise over than preserving it. Apparently a dime in your bank account today is worth more than a sustainable future.

Aloha Roger, to many it was paradise, to some it still is, but to most the verdant jewel of the Pacific is being bulldozed over in order to make way for developers, automobiles, and toxic GMO seed farms. So much profit to be made at the expense of our precious environment and health.

Aloha Roy, mahalo for the Kokio Ula, I love how vibrant they are. The word for orange in Hawaiian is "alani" but this Hibiscus is associated with the Red varieties or "ula" and is refereed to as such.

Kimo, your eloquence in explaining the beauty of the Hibiscus both now and long ago, is exemplary and I, too am sad for the grind of the almighty dollar taking precedence over the protection of our beautiful world.

On a brighter note, I recently heard that Hawaiin music is making a great comeback!!
