For a couple whose first years were spent moving from place to place, we have turned from rolling stones to being planted in stone in our adopted island city of Alameda CA
Nomads, that's what we were
When Gary and I first met in Tallahassee FL, I was on the verge of moving to Orlando FL. He decided to come with me. In Orlando, we lived in an apartment before buying a house and then buying another.
Fate intervened through mergers and acquisitions, and I was given time out.
But then another branch of the company hired me in Dallas TX only to be forced to early retirement.
Homeless, jobless and friendless
Well, I felt like I was too young to go out to pasture. I wanted to work! We decided to go to California to be closer to my family.
At that time, I was "Homeless, jobless and friendless" ---- homeless because we sold our house; jobless because I was laid off; friendless because outside of family, we didn't know anyone in California. Not really sure where we would settle, we sublet in San Francisco, Mountain View, and Oakland.
We even drove along the coast --- We liked Seattle WA, and also considered Portland OR, and even San Diego CA.
Gary used to tell people we moved around so much that anytime I told him it's time to move, he was ready at a moment's notice. All he needed to pack were his tooth brush, phone, computer and backpack, and off we go!
Home, sweet home (finally)
One rainy day, while driving down Shoreline Drive in Alameda, Gary took one look at San Francisco skyline across the Bay, and said "Hmmm...this could work." And that's all that mattered: we found our home.
Two moves later as well as a new career as a REALTOR, we are firmly entrenched in our home where we have stayed the longest since Gary and I have been together. We have indeed turned from rolling stones to being planted IN stone.
We chose well. We are very happy in Alameda.
