Cash For Grass in Novato

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services CalBRE#01383378

The North Marin Water Distrcit sent out a notice today that they are offering a cash incentive (up to $400 per single family dwelling) to removed regularly maintained and automatically irrigated lawn areas to then replace with low water use plantings on drip irrigation or with synthetic turf.

Also offered for "Do It Yourselfers" is a "sheet mulching" program.  They deliver free compost, cardboard and mulch for eligible projects.

Go to www.nmwd.com for rules and application.  Call 415-761-8944 to schedule an appointment.

This is a sign of the times.  If you are thinking of selling your house, curb appeal will speak volumes to buyers.  A thirsty or dying lawn may not be as attractive as one of the options offered here.

I took advantage of Yountville's program last year. They pay $1 PSF up to $750 but when checking it out in other cities, some were as high as $2 PSF up to $2,000. Thanks for the follow, cheers cvc

You were lucky.  Novato is paying $50 per 100 square feet, maximum of $400.

Anything is better than nothing. I did take out about 850 SF so I did get the full amount. Here's some shots of what it looks like, cheers cvc

Margaret, I think that's a great incentive program.  Yards can look beautiful without grass and maybe even more so!

These are great incentive programs to combat the drought.  Saw a little rain down here last week, hope to see more sooner than later.

Hi Margaret, we certainly hear and read about the drought and water shortage in different parts of the country. Your photo examples of a lawn-yard solution to 'curb appeal' seems to be a nice solution. The yards pictured look very nice.

It was interesting that I had a comment from someone on Facebook, where I also posted the info, that he was suspicious the water district could put a lien against the property if you re-installed a lawn!   I called the water distrcit to inquire, the 'what if' you put hte lawn back in?  I was told the rebate is a one-time event that runs with the property but no liens etc go on the property in event of a default.

BTW Curtis, your lawn redo looks awesome.  I like the 'water-less feature'!
