If you’re looking for an executive style golf course in the heart of Phoenix, a course that packs tons of fun into 9 holes you’ve found it --welcome to Palo Verde Golf Course.
Palo Verde is one of eight public courses around the valley that are operated by the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.
The birth of Palo Verde goes back to 1960 when Jim Jemsek came to Phoenix from Chicago. You could say that golf was in Jim’s blood as he was the youngest brother in the Jemsek family and the Jemsek family owned Cog Hill Golf & Country Club just outside Chicago.
Unhappy with the long lines at the local pro shops Jim began looking for a property and found a farm at 15th Avenue and Maryland that belonged to the Rae family. The nine hole course was built around a farmhouse, silo and pond and opened for play in 1961.
Jim Jemsek put his knowledge of world class courses to good use in the design of Palo Verde and although it’s a relatively short course,(only 1700 yards), it can be a very good test of your golf skills with elevated greens and banked aprons throughout. There are 3 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s and water comes into play on each of the first three holes.
Palo Verde is now operated under the City of Phoenix Parks & Recreation Department and offers the most reasonable green fees, (see below), in the Phoenix Metro area. Municipal courses like Palo Verde are a great place to introduce youngsters to the great game of golf.
The course is open year round from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. The range is open during normal course hours. If you live within nearby subdivisions like: Hoffmantown, Marlette Acres, Maryland Gardens, or Maryland Gardens 2 you are literally walking distance from Palo Verde Golf Course.
If you enjoy the company of other golfers who play on a regular basis you may want to consider joining the Palo Verde Men’s or Women’s Golf Club. The men’s club has been playing together at the Palo Verde Golf Course since 1981. Originally they were the Town and Country Men’s Golf Club until that course closed.
The Men’s Golf Club plays tournament golf every Saturday morning, rain or shine. When you join the club you become a member of the Arizona Golf Association and the club maintains a handicap for you.
The cost is $65.00 per year and $2.00 per round which goes into the prize fund for that week. If you win prize money it is applied to your account in the Pro Shop.
There is a Club Championship each year and the winner is awarded a plaque at the annual banquet.
The Palo Verde Women's Golf Club is open to any woman who wishes to compete in a nine-hole golf league. There are both a winter and summer league offered. Both leagues meet every Wednesday morning.
Winter league runs September through May. Summer league runs June through August. Tee times vary according to the season of the year.
Membership Cost: $29/year for winter league, $11/year for summer league. For more information contact Club President: Sharon Austerman 623-934-0169
You’ll be hard pressed to find more affordable golf anywhere in the Phoenix, in fact Palo Verde’s Winter fees schedule allows you to play every day of the week for less than the average fee for one round of golf on many of the Valley’s resort courses.
