Are You A Prepper? by Bill Roberts
For the last several years there has been a spate of Prepper shows on
TV. You may have found these programs to be interesting and entertaining.
But did you think that, just maybe, these people are slightly kooky?
If so, you may have missed some of the warning signs:

The Economy Sucks
Every Day The Fed Creates More Money
Terrorism Is On The Rise
The Government Wants Your Guns
The EPA has A War On Coal
Cyber Attacks Are Increasing
Local Police "Look" More Militaristic

One of my favorite economic prognosticators Jim Rickards
has released a new theory on the state of the economy. He has articulated what he calls the snowflake theory. The snowflake that will set off the financial avalanche. A very small event that starts all the dominoes falling.
And fall they will. The idea is that any one of these "snowflakes" could set off the avalanche, and we will all be swept away.
We could have a disruption to the Power Grid. We could have Food Shortages. We could have Riots in major metropolitan areas. We could have the value of the Dollar Fall to Zero. We could have foreign countries refuse to Buy Our Bonds. We could have a major Terrorist Attack followed bt Martial Law.
And the list goes on......
Almost anything could set off the avalanche.
And if it starts you can expect to have massive unemployment, riots, food shortages, power outages, martial law, worthless money, bank closures, bands of marauders, chaos, no Internet, and more (or should I say less?).
Then what are you going to do? It will be too late to become a prepper. You'll starve, maybe die. You will have nothing and be totally helpless.

Avoid the Pain

If that scenario doesn't appeal to you maybe you might like to take a few small steps now to avoid the pain.

First.  Move out of the city. You'll be a lot safer in the country.
Second.  Generate your own power and dig a well.
Third.  Grow some vegetables, get a cow, have a fish pond, and a few chickens.
Fourth.  Fortify your home, starting with the perimeter, then the house, and finally a bolt-hole or safe room.
Fifth.  Arm yourself.
Sixth.  Have something you can trade, such as real silver coins.
Seventh.  Get an older car, one that was made before cars had electronic ignition systems.
Eighth.  Have lots of tools.
Ninth.  Books, Books, and more Books. Remember, there will be NO INTERNET.
Tenth.  Have a group of like-minded friends or neighbors.

Do all this and you have a chance to survive, and maybe even prosper.
On the other side of the coin, if none of this happens, you are still better off.

Bill I don't listen to this stuff.  I so remember the Y2K BS and how many people bought into it. Not this one!

Anna, I'm sorry to hear that. This one is the real deal. I don't know how much time we have, but it is inevitable because of the declining value of the dollar.

Whether it happens as an economic collapse or a terrorist attack, at the end of the day, being prepared well helps even in times of weather related catastrophes, such as hurricanes, tropical storms and snowstorms.  It always helps to have a stocked pantry of foodstuffs that need no power to fix.  The economy we have now is built on a house of sand and cannot sustain itself.  When a huge percentage of adults are not working, are underemployed or have dropped out of the job market, it's a huge red flag.

Susan, I couldn't agree with you more. It never hurts to be ready for any eventuality.

B TW I wish I was as far along on this as you seem to be.

Bill- I do have a friend who has done what you said... he lives in New England.  I do believe in being prepared and am so for a hurricane or other natural disaster.

Kathy, Prepping is a matter of degree. Some is better than none. But, no matter, I hope you never need it.

BTW I like SW Fla because escape would be easy.

Bill I can probably do most of the stuff on your list, but digging a well and getting "a cow, have a fish pond, and a few chickens" may prove challenging on a 5,000 sq. ft. lot.

Living in Florida we prepare for hurricanes every year.  Being prepared and self-sufficient is a good thing.

Good luck and success.

George, I'm sure you have friends that will have a cow. Good luck. As for me, you are too close to the big city. They'll be coming.

Lou, Prepared for a hurricane is one thing, but being prepared for what is coming is quite another. Good luck.

Bill, many of those scenarios are a real possibility and I watched a few episodes of that show but stopped watching it since far too many of the people on the show lacked the common sense to survive much of anything in the long term.

Most people in the country would not survive a catastrophe, but farmers and many rural people who are in tune with the natural systems will hardly notice the difference.

Bob, you make a good argument for moving to a rural area.
