HBMF 2015 Headliners The 10th Anniversary Hawaii Book & Music Festival includes something for everyone!
The Hawai'i Book and Music Festival offers a unique experience that celebrates our diverse cultural heritage, the love of books, and music. If you like the experiential joy of reading a bounded book or the falcetto melodies of our local music than this weekend long festival is a must see.
For Headliners we have Barry Lopez, America’s #1 nature writer. Michael Gruber, master of the thriller genre. Kathryn Ma, whose novel The Year She Left Us “heralds the arrival of a fierce, subtle new American voice.” Sam Horn, whose new book, Got Your Attention? How to Create Intrigue and Connect with Anyone is being compared to Dale Carnegie’s classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. Jay Asher, whose 13 Reasons Why, a #1 New York Times Best Seller, is the basis of a his last stop in his50-state campaign against bullying. Austin Aslan, whose debut YA novel, The Islands at the End of the World is set in Hawaii, reckoned by Kirkus as one of the best ten books of 2014 in its genre.
KIMO HUSSEY'S UKULELE WORKSHOPS
Ukulele master Kimo Hussey, one of the most respected ukulele players in the world and co-author of the best-selling Hawaiian music songbook, He Mele Aloha, will offer a series of four exclusive workshops in April and May to benefit this year’s Hawaii Book & Music Festival presented by Bank of Hawaii.
2015 Ka Palapala Poʻokela Award Winners
The Hawai’i Book Publisher’s Association hosted the 2015 Ka Palapala Poʻokela Awards at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. There were a lot of greats books in the field of nominees, but only these select few were chosen as the winners of the Award of Excellence and Honorable Mention in their respective categories, representing the best of Hawaiʻi publishing in 2014.
On the Main Stage
Another banner program of Hawaiian music and some of the best hula halau. Three fabulous ‘ukulele players: Kimo Hussey, Herb Ohta, Jr, Derick Sebastian. Kenneth Makuakane hosts a Singer-Songwriter Competition. Brother Noland, Kūpaoa, Kapala, Carmen Haugen Quartet, and the Royal Hawaiian Band. Kumu Tracie & Keawe Lopes, Michael Pili Pang, Mapuana De Silva, Blaine Kamalani Kia.
On the Keiki Stage
Mr. Steve, rock star for the younger set, National Co-Host of PBS KIDS, will be back in Honolulu for two performances for schools in the Hawaii Theatre, but of course FREE in six shows at HBMF. Two dozen rollicking acts of entertainment for keiki of all ages: storytellers, entertainers, musicals, plays, Romeo & Juliet, and the Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars.
