The Duluth, Minnesota area got blasted by some heavy-duty stormy spring weather today.

Local news stations reported sixty-plus mile per hour winds in Duluth harbor, with twelve-foot waves striking the shore.  Duluth didn't receive as much snow as expected so far, but winds have been unexpectedly strong.

People were advised to stay indoors.  Large pieces of ice were picked up by the gale-force winds and did damage to cars and building windows.  The wet, heavy snow has made driving difficult and visibility was minimal in some areas.

The bad weather stretches across Carlton County and into Superior, Wisconsin, across the south shore and into the Upper Peninsula area of Michigan.  The National Weather Service has put out a warning that the western shore of Lake Superior will experience "high winds and waves" with the likelihood of shore erosion and flooding in some low areas.  Motorists are advised to use caution if driving close to the Lake Superior shoreline and to watch for "ice thrown onto roadways".

The high winds are expected to subside tomorrow as the storm moves off to the east.

10 Comments on Duluth Pounded By Spring Storm With Twelve-Foot Waves on Lake Superior!

I had about 6-12" waves on my half acre pond today, with tornado watches and warnings all day in mid eastern MI. Not quite as bad as your throwing ice as I didn't hear of any actual tornados or disaster yet.

WOW...12 foot waves on the lake? That's wild.

I love extreme weather. Something about the wild beauty of nature getting a bit out of control. Still, I hope no one got hurt. Stay safe, Eric!

Now that's scary...chunks of ice flying through the air...You win! Your weather is worse!

Joey -- Lake Superior is more like an inland sea than a lake.  It's big..almost 32000 square miles.  And when the weather gets nasty, you take it seriously!  Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald..

Joan -- This isn't a weekly occurrence, but we do get some pretty wild spring storms on Lake Superior!  April and October are two of the wildest months on the Great Lakes.

Hope you weren't planning to go out for boat ride or for some fishing!  Those are some major waves - although most of us who don't live near the great lakes forget how large (and powerful) they can be. Jade & Tundra's breeder lives right off of Lake Ontario in Fulton, NY. The lake effect snow is really something - which is hard work for her. It's also what she chose so that there was plenty of snow for dog sledding.

Ruthmarie, this is a good time to stay off Lake Superior!  You're correct that those lake effect snows can really churn out the white stuff!
