Ice Road Video: Experience a Trip Across Two Miles Of Frozen Lake Superior

My friend John Lindquist was kind enough to send me a link to his YouTube video of a March 8 trip across the ice between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island.

The movie provides a behind-the-wheel view of what it's like to drive the ice road to Madeline Island.  I've received many comments from visitors to my blog about what it's like to travel the legendary ice road across part of Lake Superior in midwinter.  Once you've watched John's video, you'll feel like a seasoned veteran ice driver!

The video illustrates what you can do with a dashboard camera and a little ingenuity.  John commented,

"My dashcam is a Vivitar ViviCam 3650 which I don't think is still in production.  I bought it a couple years ago at Walgreens in Eau Claire for about $35, and then the optional memory card was an additional $35-40 or so.

I certainly don't mind your linking to my video or embedding it.  Now that I've discovered how easy it is to work with YouTube, I've got lots more to upload!

Cheers,

John Lindquist"

The ice road is history now, but I hope this video will coax a few of you to come up to Madeline Island next winter for a trip across the ice.  And imagine what kind of neighborhood video tours you could produce with a dashboard camera!

Pretty cool video! I definitely can relate to the experience now! It looks much less harrowing than I had imagined!

Rich, yeah the video makes the trip look a lot less forbidding, doesn't it?

I like John's "dash cam" idea.  I gotta get me one of those!

Cool video!  Made me a little nervous though.  What if the ice cracked.....I live in Seattle where we barely get a dusting of snow each year!

I just left a comment on the video (pending approval). I don't think I would have been able to resist doing a few donuts. What the heck? In Florida I'm always on the lookout for a patch of sand that might be donut-worthy :P

Carmen -- I've been driving the ice road for nearly three decades and never had a problem.  Usually we get small cracks in the ice.  You just "hop" them..

Lisa -- Actually the folks who maintain the ice road get irritated at people who do donuts on the ice.  It can tear up the ice road.  Ice racing in motor vehicles is also a big no-no.  But I do know guys who do that kind of stuff on the smaller inland lakes.
