4 Tips for Your Lawn

Being outdoors makes everyone happy, and you want to enjoy your time outside. I’m sure you also take pride in making sure that your lawn looks your best, but not without hard work, time, and money. Here are a few tips that might help you keep your lawn green and plush. Spring Maintenance – What this means is that after a harsh winter, your soil needs additional support. Now is the time to clean, fertilize, and mow your yard to ensure that it gets an early start to grow healthy and strong.

·         Address problem areas early – this can add stress to your lawn, and if not taken care of, can make your lawn susceptible to weeds and disease.  If you have uneven ground, try to even it out. This will assist with good drainage. If you have soil compaction, aerate your lawn to give the roots some room to breathe and grow deeper.

·         Reseed – After you aerate, reseed your lawn. This is vital now before the weather gets too hot or humid. Water regularly to maintain soil moisture and fertilize with a slow-release, low-nitrogen product. Mow when the grass reaches 3 or 4 inches. Do not cut more than 1/3 of an inch, as this can cause stress to the baby grass.

·         Fertilize – This encourages growth and also gives extra nutrients that your lawn needs to grow. Make sure that you use slow release nitrogen fertilizer. No more than 1 lb. of nitrogen should be spread per 1,000 Sq. Ft. It should be applied early in the season when the turf begins actively growing; applying to late in the season can actually burn your grass.

·         Mowing – Before your first mow of the season, ensure that your mower blade is sharp. Cutting your grass with a dull blade is like cutting hair with an old pair of scissors. Also, make sure that you cut your lawn to the tallest height recommended for the type of grass that you have.
